E90 Review In Bimmer Magazine !!!

I picked up the June issue of Bimmer magazine because its a 1999-2010 3 series buyers guide, i recently purchased a CPO 2006 325I and was interested in their thoughts regarding the E90. Much to my surprise they pretty much bashed the car, its more or less a throw away item after the warranty expires because of them being very problematic and fiscally unrepairable. Not what i was expecting to read in a magazine deticated to BMW's..........

You have to realize, that mag is written by heritage enthusiasts. People who bore your head off talking about the good old days and how BMW has lost it's way etc. X5 M is sacrilege, OMG!! no dip sticks and Runflat tires!! Ignore their ignorance and enjoy your E90, my 06 330i has 67k miles on it and has been as reliable as any other car I've owned and is easy enough to maintain. It certainly is not a throwaway car and I would be comfortable keeping it outside of warranty.

You too have nothing to worry about... Just stay away from the 335's

In 2 years, mine has had the following replaced:
4 Fuel Pumps
1 low pressure fuel pump
2 Turbos
6 injectors
Vanos system

You think I'm keepint it out of warranty? For me what they are saying is very true

100% this. BMW does things all the time that annoy the purist side of me, but this is the future. Some are too tied to the early days (a la E30 and prior) when a BMW was truly a drivers car before anything else. The market has changed, and BMW has to adapt. There aren't enough enthusiasts in the world to keep the company alive.

That said, I still believe BMW offers the most driver-oriented mainstream cars available today. An SUV that can pull more G's around a skidpad than the current M3? Engineering marvel. Run flats? The future. A 6000lb 7 Series that does 0-60 in well under 5 seconds and feels more like a 3 in the twisties? Genius. As awesome as the BMW enthusiast community is, there's a good amount of criticism (which is good, really, since BMW is far from perfection). But sometimes you just need to take a step back and admire zee work of zee German engineers making these cars.

Hi, you're an extreme case. Hardly a good point of reference for the 335i.

I thought they were encouraging people to buy used 2006 325i(s)? "Buyer's Guide Great Drivers Rapid depreciation of out-of-warranty BMWs means great deals on great driver's cars like those in our Top Ten. By Mike Miller"

Don't get the E90. I had 3 cup holders replaced. I thought about lemon-ing it.

I used to subscribe to BIMMER (or Bummer) magazine. Mike Miller constantly trashes modern day BMWs, when in fact the 1960's and 1970's and early 1980's BMWs were small, slow, well handling, and unreliable. I'm familiar with all of them. Not until it became fashionable in the 1980's to own a BMW it was an enthusiast’s car because only enthusiasts would put up with the shit to own one.

When you read the statement in his article that his 2002 will still be running with points (rather than electronic fuel injection) you know he's just talking trash. It is a stupid statement.

My early bimmers (1600, 2002, 2002tii) were very reliable and lasted forever (200k+ miles). I expect the same out of my modern bimmers, but the bastards in Munich improve the models so much so fast that I have not been able to resist getting the newest and greatest after 5 years (and less than 100k miles).

Because of a magazine article?

You don't understand. HPFP vs Cupholder is a pretty good debate.

My 325 has been pretty reliable. Other than the 4 times I had to bring it in for scheduled services, it's only had one sort of major problem. I've gotta say that the scheduled services were annoying though. It was just 2 months after I bought the car that pretty much everything hit and I had to get it serviced. Running on 38.5k miles and it's still running nicely. Hopefully, it lasts me to about 60k. By then, I should have one of the next generation 3 series.

No joke. I would take whatever info you get out of that magazine with a grain or two of salt. I am a subscriber and love the magazine, but just dont pay that much attention to Miller when he bashes the new Bimmers.

I agree the pop out holders OWN, I have never had an issue with mine.

And on the 335 notes, I have read a lot more about them being problematic than any other BMW. Well maybe not including the X5

PS this is NOT a bash against the 335s either, just to make clear.

I agree. I'd take a bad HPFP over faulty cupholders 7 days out of the week

I read and agree with the article to a certain degree. BMW has not be very forthcoming with information regarding the repair and/or how to diagnosis for repair. If Indy shops aren't given the information on how to diagnosis and repair these vehicles without having to invest in new $15k equipment then the used market (Post-CPO) for these cars twindles.

Also Mike doesn't think the cars are crap, he's just po'd that BMW has elected, like the competition, to utilize more and more plastic parts which break. I think it was the cooling systems of the E36 which set him off.

No, he thinks they are crap. He says not to own one past the 100K mile warranty period, and that all his customers expect to either keep their BMWs past 100K or buy them w/100K mile on them, so he thinks they are crap. Apparently a ignition-point 2002 is a better car than an E90 since it will be running in the year 2045 and the E90 won't unless there is a smartphone app that can tell the mechanic how to fix it.
