Performance Exhaust Price Differences

First post ever, be gentle...

Ive got an E92 2008 328xi Coupe and want the Performance Exhaust installed.

I still have a full warranty for the next 6 years, so I want to get the PE installed at a BMW dealer so nothing gets voided. I have called a bunch of dealers in my area and found prices for the PE alone anywhere from $1000 - $1400.

Unfortunately I've also been quoted an installation fee anywhere from $170 - $400, at about $120 an hour. Some places said it would take about 1.5 hours and others said 3 hours.

I feel like I'm getting ripped off getting the PE installed at a dealer, but I don't want to mess up my warranty. Anyone had their PE installed at the dealer, and if so how much did it run you/how many hours at what rate?

Also what did you do with the old exhaust? Sounds like a dumb question too me, but I haven't heard anything from anyone about it.

Thanks

should cost no more than 100 at a good muffler shop.

I would not sweat warranty on exhaust system. It is bmw part.

install is 3 cuts, three bolt on splice collars and took my guy 45 mins which included lunch break. not rocket science.

save old exhaust in case you sell car, you can reinstall and recoup some money by selling the PE.

So getting it installed at a non-BMW dealer won't jeopardize my warranty in any way?

You won't get the warranty. I did not install it at a BMW dealer because I made mine quad tips, and they would cut my leg off if I had done it there.

Damn dude, you got ripped. Costed me $40 and took 15 min...

It will jeopardize your warranty, but that's not to say that the entire warranty on your car will be void. There are threads which explain mods and your warranty, just . Anyway, if you're that concerned about keeping your warranty intact, you made the right choice by going with the OEM BMW PE, but cough up the money and get it installed at a dealer. They shouldn't charge you for more than an hour of labor because it LITERALLY takes 15 min to install, and I'd suggest you keep the receipt as a record that it was done at a BMW dealer.

Good luck and enjoy the exhaust!

Some dealerships are retarded enough to tell you that your gauge cluster needle failed because you installed custom carbon fiber interior trims. Some dealerships will honor the warranty even with heavy aftermarket mods. In general, stuff like exhaust will not void your warranty unless the installer is stupid enough to weld your exhaust tips to your intake manifold. Don't worry. Get it installed at any local exhaust shop with good reputation.

You are getting ripped off badly. Which dealership quoted $400 for a friggin' exhaust install? Service department of that dealership should be bombed with a nuke equivalent to Hiroshima. You shouldn't be paying any more than $100 for exhaust bolt-on installation. If welding or custom work is necessary, maybe up to $200. 1.5~3 hours for exhaust installation? They must hire 5 year old kids to install these. It shouldn't take more than 45 minutes for a shop to do it. Most custom shops can do it within 20 minutes max. You do not have to go to the dealer to do this.

Keep it to yourself if you plan on selling your car with stock parts later (which you should). Otherwise, post it in Classfied section in E90post and sell it.

Many people without much modding experience are very paranoid regarding warranty issues. They believe what the dealership tells them. Which usually involves, "Do not add/modify ANYTHING in the vehicle sir, because it will completely void your warranty and you do not want that!". As someone who modded cars (w/ warranty) for more than 10 years, I can safely say, that unless the dealership service department is full of assholes, they will most likely honor your warranty even with small or large modifications here and there. Usual "bolt-on" mods won't void your warranty. Remember, if the dealership tries to void your warranty because of your modifications, they must scientifically and technically prove that the modification you've done caused the damage to the vehicle so they voided your warranty.

Thanks so much for all the input...

The dealer that quoted 400 said that they needed to buy 3 new clamps in order to secure the new exhaust to the frame; no other dealer has mentioned it, and I haven't heard anyone on here say anything like that either.L

It looks like I can get the exhaust for $1000 even and have it installed at a dealer 2 hours away for $150. I'm a little too nervous about voiding anything at all so I think I'm gonna shoot for the BMW dealer install. Any last input or thoughts before I pull the trigger?

Thanks.

You seem to be leaning towards getting it done at the BMW dealer even though some of us have said to just get it done at a local shop. You're biased as it is since you're worried about the warranty. With that said, it doesn't leave you with much of a choice -- just get it done at the dealer.

The exhaust already comes with 3 clamps on it to clamp the mid-section and muffler together so it doesn't need welding -- the whole process consists of making 3 cuts into the stock exhaust to remove it, and tightening down 3 clamps to install the BMW PE. All parts can be transferred from the original exhaust to the BMW PE (in terms of the hangar (or whatever it's called), etc.), so the dealer who told you that you need new parts is trying to rip you off...

Anyway, I PMed you about better pricing. Good luck!

If you get the Performance Exhaust the dealership is not going to ask you where you go it installed. It's a PE by BMW and is under there warranty. Most dealers wont care. So save yourself the money and go to the local shop and get it done.

Well, I pulled the trigger and ordered the PE from BMW... $1300.00 Installed at the Dealer (Tax Included) I'm sure i'll get shit for spending so much to get it taken care of at BMW, but I just didn't want to risk anything.

Ill post pictures and video on Sat after I get it installed.

I just got mind installed at a dealer - and in hindsight I got robbed. I would avoid doing it any dealership!

I was gonna say something along these lines as well. Unless whoever does it seriously screws the install, I think most dealers will just assume it was installed by BMW since it is OEM.

That's not bad actually. Considering Tischer I believe has them for $1200. So I think it was still a good deal.

I think it's $1,000 at Tischer for a 328i. It's $1,300 for a E92 335i.

any dealer will rip you off on labor cost's, even something as simple as a bolt on exhaust. my advice is to pick up used BMW PE or get an aftermarket one like meisterschaft, eisenmann, remus etc.

Oh ok, I've only looked for the 330 so I was going off what I remembered that being.

I was wrong, I got called by the dealer today and the total was $1240.

So, pulling out 7% sales tax = $1153 for the part and the install.

So assuming the part was $1,000 and a dealer install at about $153, I think I actually got a pretty sick deal.

I'm calling my parts guy tomorrow to see about a discount on the intake as well....
