Tire / Rim Insurance through BMW
Has anyone recently purchased their car and bought the BMW tire and rim insurance? Even though it's BMW, it looks like it's managed by Safe-guard.
In the fine print, it doesn't specify whether they cover any tires and rims. Do they have to be the original tires and rims on the car at time of delivery? I will call the 800 number on Monday. Also what is the price that folks paid for the BMW plan? |

I purchased it...i'm not 100% sure about if whether or not it only covers the original equipment at the time of delivery because i don't plan on changing either of the two...i believe it covers all oem rims and RFTs which are within the spec of your vehicle...not 100% sure though

i paid around ~600-700
i switched my 157's to 189s, (bought from someone on these forums) hit a big pothole the next few days, got a bubble on the front tire and another bubble on back went in for schedule oil change, when we did the car inspection the SA noticed them They replaced both tires for me with no questions asked, but i'm not sure if he knew the rims and tires were swapped out. |

This insurance is a lot more expensive than it was a few years ago (just maybe because of the number of RFT claims!!!) If you bought 3 or 4 years of coverage 3 years ago for $600, you got lucky but there's no way to do that now since insurers tend to raise rates when unexpected claims come rolling in. In Southern CA MSRP will be somewhere around $1100-1500, depending upon time/mileage coverage you choose. I didn't buy it since I don't encounter too many potholes on my regular driving routes and the cost of the insurance was in the ballpark of replacing all 4 tires with next generation RFTs when they become available (supposedly this year, but the date seems to keep slipping).

I paid $390 for it, have never used it. Maybe the price did go up because they told me if I got one flat it would pay for itself. Well, I've never gotten a flat so it was a waste.

I bought the wheel and tire coverage when I picked up my CPO car. I told the BMW sales guy that I didn't plan on keeping the stock wheels long, he told me it didn't matter what wheels and tires I had as long a they are within BMW specs they are covered. I just put on some CSL reps yesterday, so I hope they are covered.

I bought it for $750 here in Southern California. It's good for 5 years and unlimited miles. It was a must buy for me since I have RFT and the CPO already came with premium wheels so I don't plan on switching them out anytime soon (if ever).
Also TS you are correct, the insurance is handled by a 3rd party - not BMW. |

My stealership (Canada) said it would cover any wheels and tires bought from a BMW dealer. Including snows. But it is now priced so you need to replace 2-3 tires (2 rears, 3 fronts) or a rim and tire to pay for it.
Ed312ly - If you had BMW wheels on the car, dealer probably assumed they were from his or another dealer. |

Scam. Just another way to get money out of your pocket, since it's pure profit for the dealer. Pass and deal with a problem should one arise.

Ive used the insurance myself once already... Paid $750, recently had a tire replaced that had a nail in it, Safe-Guard refunded me about $250 for the tire... but not for the labor, which was about $75... Not complaining though.. Def. worth it, IMO

With this kind of insurance the question you have to ask yourself is, if BMW bets that selling you this insurance will make it profitable for them, why are you betting for the opposite?
