The lifters are a common N52 issue. I was at an autox earlier this year with a 2001 528i, a 2005 ZHP 330i, and a 2008 228i. They all were ticking. It was kinda funny

Trust me...my car is way worse than yours.

Sorry about the issues. I am curious about your tires. Do you like them? How well are they wearing? You are using the same size front and rear? I have AD07s on the Elise, and they stick like glue, so very curious to see how the AD08s would work on the 128i.

If the ticking noise comes back the next step is to replace the cylinder head.

Got my lifters replaced a month or so ago. No ticking noise yet.

Our SA said that the BMW procedure is lifters first. Apparently it works about 80% of the time. The parts and labor cost for replacing the cylinder head is about $6,000 so I can see why they would try lifters first.

Is this ticking noticable, I have not heard any ticking, worried that I may have missed it.

It's obnoxiously noticeable

There is another thread indicating it is a problem through late 2008 or early 2009 motor production. I am hoping my June 2009 car build has the later parts but I have not checked the head casting to know for sure. My motor sounds fine, however.

I still haven't figured out how much of an issue this is. It seems to me that the clearance will disappear when the oil pressure rises. If so, then it seems more of an annoyance than a big issue. In other words, it is more important that your valve clearance be limited when you are under power than it is whatever it is at idle.

Hmm, my car just turned over 26,000 miles today and I haven't heard any lifter tick. After a cold start the engine is oviously noisier than once it's warmed up, but I haven't heard any lifter tick yet. My car's a June '08 production. Something I should be concerned about?

Identify the issue 1st, if you can't, don't get concerned...lol

I wrote a thread about 6 months ago about hearing ticking from the motor when I left the car running and stepped outside of it. I thought maybe I had to flush the car down the toilet before it would explode;-)

Seriously, is this a problem with the lifters, and should I bring this in for service? Is it harmful to the engine?
