550GT - xdrive

Ordered a 550iGT - was close to buying a Panamera but opted for the BMW for the added practicality - and the performance was not lagging too far behind. Needless to say, excited - and had a couple of questions for the forum:

1. Have ordered a 550GT x-drive and delivery is supposedly scheduled for July 25th(ish). A couple of months ago I was being told the xdrive would not make it to the U.S. until November. So does anyone know whether July is realistic or whether the dealer was being optimistic to bag the deal...?

2. I opted with the stock 18" on the basis that I do a lot of winter snow driving on the east coast (and used to have a X5 4.8is with 20" performance tires that were useless on anything but dry tarmac). Does anyone know whether a good/bad idea to change seasonally to snow tires on the 18" and any issues switching run-flat tires on and off wheels? Or for that matter whether can get snow tires for the 19/20" wheels?

Thanks..

That date should be very realistic.

My 550GT x-drive was loaded on a ship on June 15 and is due to arrive in the US around June 30. Expect to pick it up first or second week of July.

I have gone with the 20" wheels, will sort the winter driving out later.

I had a run-flat blow-out late last year and the dealer had no issue getting the old one off and a new one on. The process did not seem to damage the old tire any more than it already was.

If you ask your dealer for the VIN and production numbers you can enter this at the 'mybmw' site and track the build/delivery process - my current status is as per the screenshot

The 535x-drive isn't due until fall; the 550ix and the 530dx became available (in Europe) this month. The 535dx is also tied to the fall, but I don't think we're getting that one - they seem to have trouble bringing one diesel here, let alone two.

An all-season tire is a compromise all seasons. It depends on how much snow capability you want and need. If you are really interested in maintaining maximum performance and safety, you'd swap to snows in the winter. No idea how much the tire pressure sensors cost for this model, but I'd opt for a whole new set of wheels, tires, sensors and avoid the cost of remounting and balancing twice a year. Yes, there are run-flat snow tires. One all-season tire that also is a certified snow is the Nokian WRT, and they do make at least the 18" runflat.

I note the 550 x-drive is now listed as a selectable model on the BMW web site.

Got word today that the ship with mine on it landed yesterday. Expecting delivery next week.
