Lol... Yeah, it's the NOS switch.

No, in automatics it traditionally serves as a downshift "button".

Not sure if it has that function in E90's, but every BMW I've driven (automatic) that's what it does.

Damn I feel old. I thought everybody knew what a kickdown switch is.

I guess that went out with learning proper English.

It's the transmission kickdown/downshift switch. If you hit that, then the transmission will shift to the lowest gear possible at your current speed to give you maximum acceleration. Obviously, it's only on automatics.

Lol I just forgot the word. Since I drive MT's besides my current 335i, but that's because of a medical issue. Aka getting blown the fuck up twice.

I don't reccomend hitting the kickdown switch or else this could happen.

Mercedes mistakenly put the kickdown switch in a batch of manuals a few years back. Pretty funny.

an angry german lady comes out of your glovebox with a cast-iron skillet and hits you over the head for abusing your car. you can attain higher speeds and quicker acceleration if you learn how to smoothly yet firmly ride your gears. you don't have to slam your foot all the way down on the gas pedal to go vroom vroom

I guess if you have an auto you do, otherwise you won't hit the kickdown switch and it won't downshift to as a low of a gear as it could for more acceleration - right?

i was under the impression it's more than just a "maximum-possible downshift" button, but it also puts the engine in a closed-loop map full-throttle mode. i.e. anything short of kick-down isn't 100% throttle.

was i mistaken? is it only for downshifting, or is it also required for full throttle?

SMG cars also have the kickdown switch; only works in D mode but is disabled when using the paddles to change gears. If you've ever driven a V10 M5 in D mode doing 60 mph and decide to engage kickdown ... wow.
