Tranny went...
I was driving on the highway a couple days ago and my transmission started shifting really hard. Started doing it a little and then eventually began shifting so hard the car shook every time it shifted. I took it to the dealership and they said it probably only needs a reprogram. Spoke with service yesterday and they tell me I need a new tranny. Thank god its under CPO because they told me it would cost between $7,000 and $8,000 for a new tranny not under warranty. Anyone else have a transmission go in their car? I thought these transmissions were bullet proof.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Just recently bought the car. I am guessing it was never changed because on the car fax it lists every service that was done and the tranny fluid isn't listed on there.

Also, you can't just look at mileage, time is also a factor.

I had the same thing happen to me in m 07' 328i sedan. I just leased it new, and 2500 miles in, the car won't shift into 6th gear as if there was no gear to put the shifter in. Took it to the dealer, they didn't even open the tranny, just ordered a new one from Germany.

That life time oil in the tranny is BS. I changed mine at 100k and it was black as it can be. BMW is in to make money like any other company. Rich people will buy BMW and keep them for 4 years until the warranty is over. After that BMW doesn't care what happens with the car since most new BMW owners are repeat clients that change new cars every 4 years. WHy not give so call free maintenace as incentives ? Oil changes every 40k ( WTF is that ? ) and life time oil for tranny? Wake up BMW.... some kids these days that are buying used BMW that will have tranny and engine problems may never go and buy a new BMW when they grow up if they had a bad experience with your unproperly serviced BMW. I had an used Audi that sucked me dry in my teen years. I will never buy an Audi, ( except r8 ) in my life.

Mike Miller at Roundel recommends every 50K miles for BMW auto boxes. That's what I did with my old E36 M3 and it was still going strong when I sold it at 140K miles.
Planning to do the same thing with the 335i. You hear recommendations as low as every 30K and as high as 60K. I figure 50K is a safe interval. Lifetime is ridiculous -- even 100K is way too much, as people find out! |

ouch, that sucks. at least it's covered under cpo.
generally, from what i heard, "lifetime" means 100k miles. i hate that bmw is doing this. when i had my e34, the tranny fluid was changed at every inspection II service (every ~30k miles).
