It may not be a good idea to take the BMW with an engine with so few miles on an extended road trip where you will most likely stay in a certain cruising rev range

If it is possible to vary your rpms as well as your speed you should be okay. Cruise control is a definite no-no during break in.
My buddy did a similar trip with his e46 M3 during break in and for whatever reason would stop for about 15-20 min. every 100 miles. I have no idea why he did it... |

don't use cruise control, you'll be fine. Vary your speed a little bit, nothing excessive. RPMs under 4000, no full throttle.

Oops. I haven't really gone over 4500 except for a split sec to 5k, but I have been full throttling it a fair amount.
4 days and 160 miles on my car

Definitely take the bimmer, there's nothing that will make the trip go by any better than driving your new car and what easier way to get some miles through thebreak-in period. Just adhere to the break-in recc's (If you're one of the ones that listen to them). Plenty of people get ED (not erectile dysfxn) and drive from Paris to Munich and back.

It you take the bmw, be sure to vary the engine speed and road speed every mile or so. These variation should be significant and over a wide range.

Take the BMW, and mostly take back roads so you vary your RPM.
Pre-BMW, driving our Honda Accord or Civic, I would get sick of driving after about 3 or 4 hours, and a 6+ hour day of driving was a real chore. With the BMW, I can drive for 6, 7, 8 hours straight and want more.

So incase you haven't figured it out... take the bimmer.
just be sure to vary the RPMs, don't use the cruise, and stay under 4k RPMs.

My normal commute to work was half highway, so I varied my routing to take some more back roads. If you've got the time, try getting off the interstates for part of the drive. If you have the nav system, this becomes trivial. I don't know what the routing options are on the e9x; on my M5, you can tell it to avoid highways, go shortest distance (which often is NOT highways) or fastest route (which is based on posted speeds).
