First Service?

Ordered my 128i in July of '09, and received it the second week of August of '09. I have just over 4700 miles on the car. I read in the manual that the car should be serviced at least once a year. When I called to make an appointment the gentleman I talked to in the service department told me that I didn't need to have the car serviced until I was informed by the computer. When I told him it says 7/2011, he told me that it will inform me at 18 months to bring it in for servicing. Should I just wait? Thoughts?

Think about it like this. They are the system experts and the car is telling you...dude you drive me like a puss. Seriously though, I'm pretty sure BMW knows what they are doing.

I have had mine since Feb 09 and I won't be servicing it till I hit the 15000 mark or the computer tells me too. At the moment the computer is telling me at 15000 miles.

If you're planning to keep the car long term (more than 5 years) I'd say you should do a mini-service at 5000 miles. Change the oil and filter, and the transmission fluid (if you want). Continue with routine maintenance during the warranty period (though you may want to change the tranny fluid every 30,000 miles or so after the initial change) and be a bit more rigorous after the car is out of warranty.

Read up on it, there are tons of resources discussing BMW maintenance schedules.

i remember when i first got the car, the sales told me every 10000 or annual. And since its all under warranty anyways, just do the annual so that it feels like the warranty is doing its job.

Here in the UK, you can buy 3 years worth of normal maintenance when you purchase the car for £250, warranty is 3 years though. I'll be doing the first oil change around 1200 miles, especially since my car sat for over a year before I bought it.

goffsroad, your dealer is wrong. In the USA you get a free oil & filter change after the 1 year anriversary regardless of the miles. My 128i will get one in a few weeks with just 5,200 miles on it. The dealer should not reset the CBS for the oil so maybe you will get another oil & filter change before your second anniversary.

I changed the oil & filter at 1,200 miles, just a few months after ED redelivery.

M_Thompson is corrrect. Check your Warranty/Service manual & show the relevant page to your dealer's service dept.

Oil changes are CBS based or one year - whichever comes first, so you have a freebie coming this month.

Nope. I changed my oil three times before the computer finally said it was time for my first service at 19,000 miles. Absolutely no issues - unless of course you screw something up.

Watch "BMW 135i oil filter change" by John|135i on YouTube. I hadn't changed my own oil in 20 years, but everything I needed to know was in there. (Except that John admitted later that the BMW oil filter tool was waaaay better than the Walmart oil filter pliers. )

As long as you use an approved full synthetic, your warranty is in no danger. Tischer BMW sells an oil change kit on line for around $60 or your dealer should do it for about $100, if you specify an "interim" oil/filter change with no other inspections, checks, etc.

Make certain that the dash countdown is not reset so that you will get your first free change on schedule.

Sorry, didn't notice the Canadian flag. As you figured out that $100 was in the US.

On my first trip to PEI many years ago at a time when our currencies were near par, I remarked that a new motorcycle which cost $3,000 in Charlottetown was only $2,200 in the US. The shop owner observed this was true, but that then, one would have to live in the US!!

I'm also in the same position as the OP. I want to do an oil change at 2,000 kilometers (or 1,200 miles), but my dealer advised me not to and just wait until my car CPU tells me it needs a service.

The BMW 15,000 mile/year or (24,000 km/year) oil change seems kind of insufficient. My friend swears by it though and his BMW still seems fine after 7 years...

I would change the oil!!! Regardless of what BMW says. My car has a little bit over 11K miles and I have changed the oil three times already. I am due for another oil change soon. And then my first service will be do! lol

Or... just do the oil change yourself It is not hard. Go look up the 128i DIY oil change for my 135i pics.

Or demand that the dealer do it for you! After all YOU are paying for this not them. )
