DIY: Engine Cover Removal - 325 (2.5litre)

Here's how to remove the nice engine cover revealing the ugly messy engine below...

The screws on top of the cover are a ruse!! The cover simply lifts off. You just need to grab the front edge and pull it upwards then do the same at the back! You can now remove the cover. The cover is mounted by some little rubber doughnuts which sit on 4 metal nipples on the engine block.

To put the cover back on, slide it into place and push down to seat the doughnuts over the nipples (oo-er! ) lining the cover up by centring the oil filler cap with the hole in the cover! Done!!

Cool, thanks. I just was in the engine compartment when cleaning yesterday, and noticed the cover was flapping around. Didn't know if the bolts were fake, but now will try a bit of force to reseat them.

Just messin' around! Curiosity got the better of me and I wondered what the engine looked like underneath!! Wasn't impressed!

But I suppose since it removes so easily (and it looks like the badge can be removed easily too) someone'll probably end up customising theirs!

Interesting thought of carbon fibering the cover to make it distinctively cool looking, good point indeed. Thats what makes DIY fabulous

Engine looks like one of those dogs that looks bare after a haircut. Real ugly.
Amazing what a little cosmetic dressing will do.

Main thing is, the engines work really well. No argument from me.

A word of warning to diesel owners. Do not try to pull off the engine cover as it is held down firmly will allen key screws.

Anyone any idea how you remove the cover from a 330d? The two rear allen bolts seem to be inaccessable being under the microfilter assemby!

Could anything happen if I drive without the engine cover? Is anyone doing that right now?

Don't try it on an E92. The cap screws at least on the front are real, not sure about the back.

my wife's new X3 has a black engine cover which looks VERY cool. I may order a X3 engine cover to replace mine, as long as it fits.

Not in Europe. We get a 218hp 2.5 litre motor with a 3 stage intake just like the 330i.
