Windshield Crack & Replacement

Had a rock chip right near the top of the windshield a few days ago...
I didn't notice the chip at first because it was behind the rear view mirror, until 2 days ago I notice a crack extending from the top edge running down...it was around 6" long

yesterday...the crack grew to 8"+

Can the windshield still be repaired or they will have to be replaced?
The crack is on the outside, and you cannot feel it from inside. It is also right on the "black" part of the windshield. (rain sensor?)

If it cannot be repair, how much does a replacement cost?
I searched the forum but I am seeing numbers from $500 - $1700. (BMW original, installed)??

my insurance deductible is $1000 no special windshield coverage

Btw.. anyone knows where can I get clearplex? and what's their cost?
the reviews seem pretty good....and i think it would be a good investment considering I seem like a stone chip magnet...(I get about 2-3 small chip per year, and had to replace my windshield 3 times in the last 4 years because of bigger chip/crack)

You can stop the crack from getting longer by repairing, but it will be noticable...

I got a windsheild crack few weeks ago. It was on the passanger side, 10 inches down from the top right corner. The crack was about 6 inches long starting at the edge of the windsheild going horizontally towards the driver's side. Long stoy short, I got it fixed for $60 Cash at one of those tents at a Canadian Tire parking lot on Eglinton and Warden. The guy said it would take about 20 minutes, it took about an hour, but he did a really good job. The crack is visible, but not as visible as before. He also gave me a 1 year cash back warranty if the crack ever spreads. Basically what I learned is that the windshield has 3 layers, and as long as the inside layer isn't cracked it can be repaired. You can use a razor to check whether or not it cracked the inside layer. The guy also patched 2 other small chips I had on the windshield for free.

Maybe it's a design flaw The guy in a tent is just using the Canadian Tire parking lot. I don't think he works for Crappy Tire. If you do go, let me know how it went.

Ron Tordoff - 416-802-8772

I don't recall his exact location in Scarb. He is semi-retired, but he does very good work (He used to run the Can Tire kiosks outside as well) Ron is much cheaper and he can arrange to have new windsheild installed for you as well.

Is there a local guy named Jonathan who also replacing the windshield for the BMW?

The OEM windshield is weak and chipped easily, I want to replace my windshield as well. Any suggestions?

Anyone knows how much is he charging a windshield installed?

There are a couple of previous threads about replacing windshields. My experience is that the aftermarket ones do not fit. You will have to go with an OEM. Any good windshield replacement service should be able to do the job. I had mine replaced by Grand River Glass in Fergus www.grandriverglass.com. They did an excellent job but it became obvious that the aftermarket windshield was never going to fit properly. So they removed it and installed an OEM. My insurance company paid the whole shot.

Which brand of OEM windshield available in Toronto? Is it only one brand available?

My insurance does not cover the windshield unless I pay $1000 deductible.

Just called Ron Great guy, he referred me to John as well. If the crack is bigger then 6 inches then it the windshield needs to be replaced, the prices he gave me were very fair. OEM for 500$ range. And they are mobile, they come to your driveway to replace it.

I had the exact same crack but it was really noticible after the "fix" so I decided to just go ahead with a replacement.

I have Clearplex on my windshield btw. Got it done in Edmonton though. Not sure where they would do it in Toronto. If you want to see how my Clearplex is holding up, I don't mind meeting up. Had it for about 2 years now with lots of highway driving and it's still pretty good.
