Where can I rent a manual transmission beater in the GTA?

I need to train the wife on something disposable before I let her drive the 335.

I think my colleage's cousin is selling a old mustang manuall.. I can ask how much if you want.. I think last time I heard it was 1,000

You may also want to look at "Shifters" www.shifters.ca

Not quite a rental but they will teach standard driving, for existing licensed drivers, on their own cars. This is what I am using for my son before he goes near my 335IS.

+1 on Shifters. Carlos and Mack are great instructors!

Rent-a-wreck had a standard Protege last year, not sure if they still have it now though.

I don't think a weekend will do it. I suggest buying an old beater and have her learn on that; it will be cheaper than a clutch job.

How much can a new clutch cost? I vaguely remember the price list putting it in the $700-900 range. Can you really get a mechanically sound car that will pass safety certification (and will actually *be* safe to drive) with license and insurance for that little? And if the car has a crappy, unforgiving transmission, won't that make learning a lot harder as well?

I'd say the best bet is to pay a few hundred bucks for a few lessons from a professional instructor, with plenty of practice on your car in between, and if the clutch wears out a little early and has to be replaced, chalk it up to the cost of education. But, really, with proper instruction, there's no reason why a decent driver shouldn't be able to learn to drive manual without putting unreasonable wear on the car: people used to do it all the time.

at the dealer, a clutch job will run close to or over $2,000, at an indy shop, maybe half as much

Nothing against shifters...but perhaps I'm cheap..thought they were over-priced...

They are. However, back in the days, it was next to impossible for someone to lend a standard vehicle to a 16 year old though.

They're billing out at $70/hr and within that they're running a business and I'm not sure if they come to you seeing a you may not be able to get your car to them. That's not thaaaaaaaaaaat bad as you're paying for a "skilled service". Having said that I too taught my Fiance but then gave in and got her an Auto. The BMW was just too intimidating.
