Magnesium block strength?
We all know that our block is made of an aluminum inner core and a magnesium outer shell. My question is do you really think that the block is significantly weaker than an all aluminum block? I mean, at what power levels do you think our block is in jeopardy? If we venture into forced induction applications, do you think our block can handle 400rwhp? I know the only difference between ours and the n54 is an all aluminum block and a forged crank and those engines have reliably make 550+ rwhp. Our engine can definitely handle a 75 shot of nitrous so we know it handles at least ~330 crank hp...

well the limit is when you blow up your engine. i don't think we've seen that yet.

General rule for nitrous on a stock motor is no more than half the engines original horsepower. So theoretically someone could push a 125 shot but i sure wont be going past 100 once i get my new nozzles.
As for engine strength, i wouldn't be crazy. There is a reason they made the N54 block differently. Maybe if you sleeved the motor you could run it farther but that gets into a big project. |

just wait a few years until that first hardass actually attempts it. for now all you will hear about is "what exhaust is best" questions.

I dont think HP is the issue really. The issue is TQ.
On Nitrous your not making a lot of TQ since its a WOT kind on thing, so its easier ont he engine. If you Turbo it, you build a lot more TQ in the low end which is wear stress would develop first for us. our cranks are not the strongest things, i would think 300-325 TQ would grind it. which would then eat the block. IF the block survives that power, next in line is the tranny. someone mentioned it can only handle a certain amount of power, which is why the 335 has a different transmission. I havent been able to find any information to confirm that though. I think with a 335 crank and some tranny work we could hit 400whp reliably.. eventually. |

It all depends on tuning, but with a new crank and maybe a little tweaking and some trannywork or swap, yes. I would say 400 or less, definitlry not over but with work I think iot could happen.

I know people say this all the time and i usually hate when they do but if you really want to get those power numbers your better off with a 335 in the first place..... unless you don't care about reliability...
