For those that went with Non-Run Flat Tires

What did you or would you do for a spare?

I bought my non run Flats, but am wanting to mount until I either buy a spare or a repair kit. I commute 100km per day, so a lot is highway driving. I have CAA and have no idea how to change a flat, so having a spare wouldn't really help, except for peace of mind. WHat would or did you do?

I changed over from RFT's to performance tires. I bought a spare tire kit from LTBMW ($200). I set it up in my trunk with a tire tote ($20 for two) from my local BMW Dealer and nylon strap ($16 for 2) from my local auto parts store. So I spent a grand total of $236 for a spare tire set up. I feel it will be better then a tire repair kit. What if you have a major blow out and all you have is a lame repair kit? I say go with the spare tire set up.

If you're not going to use the RFTs, I'd recommend having a spare tire, jack, toolkit, air compressor, and tire patch in the car, and understand how to use them. (Also, a first aid kit and basic emergency supplies, but that's regardless of what kind of tires you have.) As you can see from the photo above, that will cut down significantly on available trunk space, but having a spare tire is, IMO, a very important piece of safety equipment if you are going to travel any kind of distance from a major urban center. If you are only going to drive in town or on major highways not far from town, you could get away without a spare as long as you have some kind of roadside assistance and a reliable mobile phone, but you could still get stuck waiting for quite some time if you need a tow, possibly in winter.

A tire patch kit and compressor are compact and are all you need to repair most nail punctures, but if your tire gets shredded or you suffer any damage to the sidewall, a patch kit is useless.

Also, if you have a spare, remember to check it for correct inflation periodically, and remember that tires have a shelf life (I think 6 years is generally the maximum age a tire should be kept for before the rubber deteriorates to a point where it's no longer reliable.)

sorry to be a buzz killer but what's stopping that tire from going thru the back seat in the event of a collision? Looks like you set up a sling shot there.

The only way I can see the tire shooting forward is if I got hit at 75 + mph. I don't care too much about loosing some trunk space. Going to the grocery store has not been a problem yet. I'm not the type that using my car as a storage place.

still running the PS2 run flats in the summer. Non-run-flat Nokian winter tires. BMW roadside assist is my spare.

If your workday was driving from calgary to canmore (back and forth) would you still just rely on BMW assist?

I'm asking cuz that is my commute

Non runflat & repair kit. Got one flat pumped it up (didnt even use the slime) it lasted until I found the 1st tire store where it was patched. If your driving is strictly city then no need for spare, but if its the opposite I would invest in one.

It's not really much heavier than lots of things that may be carried in the trunk. I expect that the rear seats are designed to keep things flying from the trunk into the interior.

When I bought my car from the dealership, they gave me no spare tire at all, no floor mats and no owners manual. I think that is just crazy because the spare tire is a part of the safety inspection.

The car comes with Run Flat Tires (RFT's) so that's why there is no spare.
