Clarkson review of 335i in today's Sunday Times

Can't find it on the website but pretty uncomplementary - certainly about the styling.

This should be the link:
http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/art...522579,00.html

one line from it:

BMW 335i SE Coupé
"In other coupés you get all sorts of fancy bits and bobs, but not in the Beemer. It's as dull and as featureless as the inside of a Cheeky Girl's head"

As you Britts all know: Jeremy isn't a BMW fan, and he will never be. When Tiff Needell should have written this article the car would have gotten 5 out 5 stars

I'd have to say I agree with you. He gives no reason as to why the car is "a big turd".

i think JK is great but his preference on cars is awful!

the guy actually loves Jaguars which are crappy ugly unreliable things which use mondeo parts.

He also loves aston martins and tvrs which all are completely unreliable.

Most of the guys likes and dislikes are based purely on where the car is made, so no way hes going to like a german car!

I also find it interesting how he mentioned BMW's involvement in the "Nazi war machine". If that is the reason for not buying a BMW, I guess these people are also not buying anything from IBM either...

BMW was forced to produce cars/aeroplane-engines and all sort of that for Nazi-Germany. If they didn't the company would've gone bankrupt, so we couldn't enjoy our cars nowadays.

BTW: Top gear is coming back on BBC2 on 28th of January. Love the show, but I don't pay attention of what they are saying about BMW.

I don't pay attention to much of anything Jeremy Clarkson ever says.

It's quite a strange review really, even for Clarkson. He actually says a lot of very positive things about the car (the engine is "little short of a masterpiece", the chassis is "perfectly balanced", steering is "excellent", brakes are "fine", "a nicely chosen balance between comfort and handling" etc.) and then hits you with that final negative punchline. I guess like several other reviewers, he doesn't like the styling, and that seems to be about the only negeative thing he can find with the car.

I agree that he does seem to have deliberately set out to find something bad to say about the 335i just becasue it's a BMW - and knowing Clarkson he just wanted to go against the tide of journalistic opinion (too many reviews saying how wonderful the 335i Coupe is), and hitting its "dull" looks was the easy option.

Oh well, who cares if he thinks it looks a bit dull? I'm happy with mine, and in fact I like the fact that its styling is subtle. I am looking forward to the M-Sport launch though I'm not sure I'd want one with stiffer suspension...

I agree but I mainly buy the Top Gear magazine for his monthly column. He may have a BMW prejudice but he writes an entertaining column.

you can figure that article was written by clarkson if it was told to you with your eyes closed. its awkward, yet not biased. i dare to say its almost bipolar. he hates the design but he enphasizes on his admiration for engineering. Clarkson unbelievably says "This engine is little short of a MASTERPIECE." wow did he actually say that? that has to be the biggest complement. nevertheless it was a great write. he really wanted you-the reader- to understand how much he thought the delivery of the engine was so easily spoken, smooth, and connected. definitely a intersting read

at least it's a nice way to write down: "I don't the like the styling", otherwise nothing but praise on the car, if you read between the lines.

He will not buy such a car because he's a patriotted Englishman.

Ouch! ...and I like watching Top Gear.

A Patriot Englishman...yep. Remember, that's his opinion, not ours. Even though he slammed our ride, he's still entertaining. Glad he's recovered.

I didn't think it was too bad. So what - the man doesn't like the styling.

The day I take aesthetics cues from a guy with a perm and his dress sense, is the day they cart me off to the funny farm.

I cannot understand the comparison of 335i's price with RX8. Whats the connection between those cars???

Its like talking for day-night...

Conclusion:Clarkson is loosing "it".

I also found it rather amusing that he hated the styling of the RX-8 because it was too "mad" (if I remember that episode correctly). However he loved the dynamics of the vehicle and even noted it was the best car he drove in 2004, save the tyres.

Perhaps he's alluding to the fact that some of the best sports coupes these days seem to miss the "style" sweet spot. Dunno, because I sold the RX-8 to order the BMW, and I quite like the styling of both. At least he didn't tell you to buy a TVR instead.
