First oil change ? What mileage ?
Allright, I have 1300 miles on my 330 and the engine os starting to loosen up a little. Sounds better and I am slowly driving it a little harder. Car runs really nice. Much more power than my 97 E39.. Anyhow, not sure I can get myself to hold out to the 15000 miles that BMW is recommending for the first change. It just seems insane to me. Are folks chnaging thoil, or perhaps throwing in a new filter.. Personally, I think at 2k I am changing it myself..

One of my friends said that I should change my oil after the break in period (which i passed yesterday). But my dealer said I am supposed to do it after 15k miles
Anyone have any experiences here? I'd rather not the change the oil myself and mess things up since we pay for the BMW warranty

I'm waiting for the free one
you'd be surprised how clean the oil stays in these modern cars My Z4 after a year and 10,000 miles still has clean looking oil I'm guessing the factory knows whey they're talking about |

It certainly won't hurt changing the oil and filter soon afrter the engine break in period provided it is carried out by BMW approved service technician. Warranty should not be affected, however, you will probably be required to pay for the service.
My dealer told me to come in for a 5000km vehicle inspection - his recommendation to check and see that everything is OK. Asked the service guy about oil change and his reaction was such that he thought about it, slowly nodded his head in an approving manner whilst still thinking about it and promptly hit the ball in my court telling me that if I want to, it is OK to do so but it is my choice. I asked him about running in the engine and possible fine shavings coming off and he couldn't argue saying that it might not be a bad idea. Extra revenue for them, I suppose but piece of mind for those of us who will probably feel better about it - myself included. So at about the 5000km mark I will have an oil & oil filter change carried out, just to be certain as I intend on keeping my car till the next 3 series is launched. Doesn't matter if the oil comes out clean.

From my understand the oil change depend on the how to you use the car how fast you usually go in the freeway. And the rpm how often is close to the red line.
If you drive your car normally you have to change the oil 15K if you used all the time with sport drive and go fast a lot the miles goes less 14k in my computer said 14200. |

Im getting my oil changed at the 1500 mile mark I dont give a crap what bmw says. New engines can have alot of metal shavings. I want it out of there, if i was leasing i wouldnt give a sh*t. Its bmw's problem, but im playing it safe. 1500-2000 mile mark in my opinion. Then after that i cant decide what to do. Chris

Spoke to the BMW Group Asia After Sales Area Service Manager (a German guy) recently on this issue and was told that you need not change the oil until the service indicator tells you to do so, even for the first oil change. He said the sensor will "sense" the condition of the oil and react accordingly to "run down" the indicator. He said is better to save the money and buy your wife a good dinner instead.

Getting mine on Monday @ 4000 miles. I know, I know, the recommended OCI is 15k, but I'm doing the first one earlier just for my peace of mind.

I recently changed mine at 1301 miles. It's easy, do it yourself if you want. I highly recommend it!

What are you gonna do if you do screw something up changing the oil yourself before the regularly scheduled maintence? Go cry to BMW that 15000 miles is too long between oil changes? They'll laugh at you. The car doesnt count down the miles til it needs service just for the 'cool' factor. Like I said though; your car, your time and your money. |

"Changing a cars oil at 1200-1300 miles is a waste of oil. Might as well change the oil with every tank of gas too..." is your opinion, just like it's ours(and alot of others too) to change after the break-in period. Why get your undies all in a bunch(snob comment) over what others choose to do in terms of oil changes? Danny

Agreed. If I want to change my oil after break-in because it'll make me sleep better at night, then it's my car, my time and my money. Who cares if it actually makes a difference or not.

To those who will be changing oil and filter earlier than the indicated OBC, make sure you tell the service advisor to NOT reset the OBC. Otherwise your scheduled free oil change will be postponed way later.

Has anyone changed their oil on a brand new car, truck or SUV and actually have engine shavings come out during an oil change or an oil lab test? Wouldn't BMW run the engine a bit and do an oil analysis before they put these vehicles on the lot?

Haha
It is kind of amazing. I campaigned an E36 M3 in SCCA/NASA and before that, I was a maniac road driver and I always did my own routine stuff (oil, brakes) and some simple repair work. People were always shocked, as if you had to have a PHD to work on a BMW. The reality is, most modern cars are very simple to work on. Parts are accessable, everything is well labeled and I don't understand how people think computers are more complicated: These days, when an engine part fails, the computer tells you the part that failed, you plug in a new one and it works. Working on old cars requires the ability to jury rig all sorts of stuff- Plug-n-Play seems a lot nicer but once you put a computer on anything, people flip out and act like it must require an MIT grad to work on. |

I might also add-
Those of you who are obsessive oil changers need to stop. Modern oils and filter material (like those used in a BMW) are pretty amazing. So is the metalurgy and machining on a new BMW motor. The translation here is that oil lasts a LOT longer then your grandfather's 3000 mile changes. You do more damage to your car when you start it up right after an oil change, when all the galleries are drained, then you do by going 10,000 or 15,000 between changes. Isn't technology amazing? |
