Do I REALLY need winter tires in Vancouver

Well, I actually live in Burnaby, but drive a lot on Highway one. I don't need to go up many hills, and don't plan to ski.

When it snows on Highway 1, it is a disaster anyway, so I just go slow.

I am planning to go with non-RFT all seasons for the winter.

How different is it driving a RWD all season, vs a FWD all season?

I don't mind throwing down another 1k for tires, but if it snows like it did last year (ie nothing) I would rather pass.

No one knows as of now whether this year will snow a lot like 2 years ago, or not snow very much like last year. One thing I know is that it pays to be prepared. A set of snow tires plus wheels from TireRack = around $1000, which is nothing compared to getting into an accident (ICBC rapes with insurance premium if you are at fault).

I would suggest you should get them. I have them for winter but I also like have high performance summers on for the rest of the year as I find they just handle better than A/S.

its hugely different. I had a mazda 3 before my 3-series. The mazda was FWD and it was manageable with all seasons in the snow, but really good once i added snow tires.. in the RWD e92, I find that I'm sliding around a lot more, even with winter tires (Blizzak WS-60's, non-RFT). there is no way i'd drive in the snow w/o winters on this car.

True, we may not get much snow this year.. but like others have said, its better to be prepared.

I got winter wheels and tires from TireRack. Spring to fall I run the OEM summer performance tires (Bridgestone) and when the temperature goes below 7C I switch to the winter tires.

Its not just about whether it snows or not, its also about the temperature. Even all seasons don't stick that well below 7.

You may want to look at all weather tires (instead of all season) if you want to stick with only one set.

Agreed, discussion of winter or fall is not allowed.

But just a quick comment, putting winters on makes a huge difference on RWD. RWD Bimmers are known to suck in the snow with "all season", even if its just an inch or so. Tire Rack does offer some good 16" winter wheel/tire package ($1000 CDN after everything). I have an e90 I use for winter and snowboarding, putting winters on was the best decision ever.

"all season" just does everything mediocre but not well so we tend to stay away from them.

Even with snow tires I still had problem going up some streets in Vancouver and Burnaby with a little bit of snow.

Are you planning to keep you car long enough to burn through a set of tires anyway? If so, why not split the wear between a proper set of winter tires and your regular all seasons or summers?

When the temperature falls below about 7ºC, winter tires provide better grip even on clean dry pavement due to softer rubber compounds that don't get as brittle in low temperatures.

Lower mainland BC is probably the part of Canada where you're most likely to get away without winter tires, but it's still Canada and we still have cold winters and even Vancouver gets snow from time to time.

Do you REALLY NEED a BMW?

Anyways weather or not you have a mild winter. Its always good to have winter tires. I have tried all seasons and winter tires its day and night difference.

Now that you asked might as well get it, since you will shot yourself if you get into an accident and ppl here already told to you to get it.

If you don't mind paying $1k for it then get it. All season tires will not work well under 10C.

Nov 26, 2006 - I'll never forget it. I was stranded in YVR for 6 hours due to snow. If it snows like that in the GVA, on a consistent basis, then yes you'll need winter tires.

oh well..

i just put down 1k for allseasons non-RFT michelin sport + 400 for spare tire, but haven't had it mounted, cuz now the dealer is going to replace the front run flats.

Not sure if I should forget about the all seasons and just buy the winters and wait till november?

Or I could mount now, and again in November I blame this one on the missus-if she hadn't complained about the ride, I would have just got winters

Why is it that everyone is always concerned about themselves?

I'll tell you this, I'm more worried about some cheap ass that doesnt have winter tires slamming in my E90 more than I am about me as I am prepared with a set of winters.

For $1000 save the headache for you and others and get a set of winters.

+1

Also snow tires are not just for snow, your summers turn in to hockey pucks when the temp drops below 7 degrees.

if you live in burnaby with all those hills and slopes, you definately need winters. winter tires are not just for treading in snow. its rubber compound is designed for low temp conditions and will not freeze up like summer tires. winter tires perform better than summers or all seasons in low temperatures regardless of snow (rain, black ice, sleet, frosty ground)

btw, all seasons are useless, they're mediocre at everything... might as well have dedicated summer and winter tires.

so should I just leave the allseasons non-RFT on the shelf until next spring and then leave the summer RFT's on until winter?

I agree you should use winter tires but summer tires are pretty useless in Vancouver. How fast can you go in Vancouver? Last time I check my avg is around 40km/hr. Save yourself some money and get all season tires. Most summer tires won't last more then 25k.
