Thumbs up BMW X1 Hits US Dealerships May-June 2011

Reported on Bimmerpost Homepage.

North American fans of the BMW X1 SAV will soon get their turn as the X1 is expected to hit U.S. dealerships in late May to early June of 2011 according to our sources. The X1 has been on sale in Europe since Oct. 2009 and is produced at the BMW Leipzig plant. Its main rivals will be the upcoming Audi Q3 and Mercedes B-Class.

The X1 has been a sales success so far, recently overtaking the Audi Q5 as the top selling premium sports utility vehicle in Europe.

Any idea of prices yet. I have a side bet on that it would start at $32-$33k

Are they building this in S Carolina? I hope not.

They are taking their time with the release because BMW is focusing on the release of the X3 in N. America. Then, following a successful release of the X3, they will shift gears to launching the X1.

Please read the post...they are not building the X1 in S. Carolina.

Is it really such a bad thing to be built at the South Carolina plant? My understanding was that this plant was rated quite well.

You forgot the Countryman, X3 then Countryman then X1. Looks like about 3 months between each launch.

The SC plant, like all BMW manufacturing facilities have top notch quality control and the robots that do the body assembly are the same in SC as the ones in Germany. None the less, mistakes do happen, even in Germany, and I can testify to that fact. But, I'm not under liberty to discuss the details.

My personal preference would be to have a car made in Germany. I'm also more inclined to purchase an X1 made in Germany that has been real life road tested since 2009 and has had the opportunity to have qwerks worked out than to buy a first MY X3 made in SC. I think this is the real reason why they are delaying the US launch of the X1, to get as many X3 sales as they can from those who are coming off lease or need another X type sooner.

It's a possibility but whether it's initially offered with a diesel or it will become available down the road, is anyone's guess at this point unless you're Norbert Reithofer (he may not even know...).

Question is, will the X1 have the new turbo 4 by then? I guess maybe the X1 LCI might be a more likely time for the turbo to show up. If so the, probably the F2x 1 series or F3x 3 series would be the first to get this motor.
