Can mirrors be set to close automatically on locking?

On an F10 with electric folding mirrors, has anyone got it set up to automatically fold the mirrors when you lock the car, and unfold them when you unlock the car or open the door?

My Mercedes ML does this and I think it is a great feature. The dealer told me the F10 couldn't do it but there might be a software update from BMW that could allow the workshop engineers to change it to allow this.

My boss' S550 does this, and I find myself asking..."why?"

Of all of the potential parking lot mishaps, how many times have my mirrors been clipped while parked in any car I have ever owned?

Retract them at will in a car wash, or at a drive-up ATM, or in a tight parking garage... I get it.... but every time you lock the car?... That is for when you want everyone to know your mirrors can automatically retract.

It is a very useful feature in the world excluding US/Canada where car park spaces are almost big enough to fit 2 cars... In other metropolitans, car park spaces are tiny and spaces between 2 parked cars barely allows an adult to walk thru. Now imagine 2 F10 parked side-by-side and you get out and couldn't get thru because the mirrors didn't foldup and blocking you......

US drivers are way spoiled and probably don't even know it.......

with the e60's...in EU the mirrors could be programmed to autofold by dealerships...but not for US models...I wouldn't be surprised if the f10 is the same way...

since the car has a computer you can program it to do just about anything, my guess is that you can hook a computer to the usb and change or add settings.

You can't....I asked my dealer the same question. I just moved back from Germany where the auto folding feature is actually useful. Over there, BMWs are parked in the street and not in garages. Parking lots? Not like in the U.S. Yes, we Americans are spoiled, but you won't even know it unless you travel. I saw many a mirrors hanging off cars in Germany. So it's very useful and needed in other countries. Especially when you parallel park on the street and the huge buses come by w/in inches of you nice BMW. Also, my 2 car garage here is bigger than the 3 car garage I shared w/neighbors over there. Don't find myself putting the mirrors up in the garage too often.

In the US we are land gluttons. We have so much that we are incredibly wasteful. This in turn creates much more air pollution for each of us Americans and we are significantly fatter than Europeans because we walk very little. It is not uncommon for suburbs to skip sidewalks. We don't walk we just drive everywhere. Our roads and lanes are extremely wide and so are our parking spaces in relation to our European peers. Ourr parking lots are ridiculously over sized and are rarely more than 40 percent filled. We waste so much and we dump so much garbage in the air and we just don't notice or care.

If you hold down the lock in your key it closes mirrors. You have to wait just few seconds. I dont think there is no need to change software. But I have another problem my right mirror used to move down when I geared to rear. Do I have to go service or its just about a setting?

As said it just means you press on the lock button for a couple of seconds and it folds them in.

As regards the kerb view on reverse, this only works if your wing mirror adjustment button is set to the drivers side mirror.

I had this issue and took it to a dealer in Sutton to be told and i quote that the mirror didn't go down due to the settings on my drivers seat meaning that tilting it down would make it unusable... apparently i was reclined too far!

Yes, if you hold the lock button it does fold the mirrors, but not on U.S. spec. Anyone US owners know if this can be programmed into th key fob?

Thanks all, looks like I will have the feature given i'm getting a UK spec car.

Now part 2 of the question, how do they unfold? By holding down the unlock button, when you open the door or do you have to press the button on the internal door handle?

A friend of mine has the F01, a Euro spec 740i. He told me that by holding the door handle when locking will also fold down the mirror. Provided you have the comfort access option too.

if it is available in EU, it can most likely be activated in the US. We are now able to perform this on our e90 3-series with coding, can also have all the windows go down AND UP, which we could not previously do, and can also code to keep the turn signal off, and only come on when signaling.
