Exclamation E90 Sunroof Cassette Problem

Hey Everybody,

Note: I almost never post on the forum so if I seem a little formal forgive me. Now here's the story:

I drive a 2008 E90 328i with sport package and manual transmission, and about 2 weeks ago noticed a loud rattling coming from the rear of the interior of the car. Now at first I thought it might have been something loose in the trunk, however it turned out it was coming from inside the rear portion of the headliner. The rattling only seemed to be occurring when the sunroof was open. I brought it into my dealer (Ray Catena BMW of Westchester) and they mentioned that some type of plastic retaining clip had broken (the service advisor had a thick accent which I could not quite understand) and that the cassette needed replacement. The car has been with them 7 days (as of this Tuesday 8/24/10) because the part was on backorder. Can anybody enlighten me as to what this is and if this problem has occurred on any other E90s?

- R

Mine was changed. It is a rather common issue that seems to happen when the car is relatively new. A bad manufacturing batch if I understand well.

Unbelievable, my dealer has been useless about it, I've had to chase down my service advisor just to get an answer out of them honestly.

To my knowledge it has to be performed by the dealer or a very experienced BMW service professional. They essentially remove the headliner and all accompanying interior trim to access the cassette so unfortunately its very time consuming and difficult. You'll have to live with it or pay for it to be fixed. If I were you I would buy the extended maintenance coverage for 6 years/100,000 miles and use that to cover your rattle problem. Plus it might save you other expenses in the long run.

The cassette is complete part which allows the sunroof to open close and pivot up when its set for venting hot air from the cabin. Needless to say the dealer has forgotten to replace my wind deflector and failed to tell me. This is the straw that broke the camel's back. Enough is enough. They had the car for 8 days and still failed to fix it properly. I really can't quite believe these people and am tempted to call BMW CCA in the morning to complain.

I think it would be best to call BMW *NA*. Calling the national car club probably wouldn't get you anywhere

Thanks Greg, but BMW CCA has ombudsmen who deal with such issue - they apparent strong arm the dealer in some way
