A little info on immobilizer + insurance
Hey guys; I got this info from a client. He found out from his insurance that Canadian insurance companies do not recognize the BMW immobilizer as a form of protection, and do not offer a discount for it. He contacted BMW and they acknowledged this, but said they are working on a Canadian acknowledged form of protection in the future. Just an FYI.
Oh, seems like some insurance companies don't recognize boomerang either. Anyway just thought I'd pass it along. I just got my premium increase going from an '03 G35 to the '07 335i coupe, $8.11 a month, so not too bad. |

I don't have the alarm and my insurance quote was sky high until I put the boomerang in... with that it dropped about 40%.

BTW... I almost didn't get the car because the insurance quote was so much higher than the others I was considering, until they told me with the boomerang it would be way cheaper.
By default they had the E90 on the computer as a car with no anti-theft at all. One other thing that made a big difference was letting them know I own the place I live in (the drop was as significant as turning 25). I would suggest anyone with car insurance call to make sure they have everything down properly and ask for a re-quote with the boomerang or engraving. It can pay for itself very quickly depending on the company.

Ya, some insurance companies apparently do recognize boomerang; I was just passing on info from a client. I will probably do a boomerang eventually, but not quite yet. Cheers.

Probably depends on the company and all the other insurance factors. It could be different in Ontario too.

Not necessarily province to province, but city to urban as well. When I was pricing insurance for the new car, I inquired about Boomerang as well. ..no difference in rates here. I was expecting to take a hit going from a 4dr sedan to a vert, but was pleasantly surprized that it was less than $100 more with annual premium.

Same here Ian, $97 increase. I just wanted to pass along the Boomerang and immobilizer info. The immobilizer is for all insurance companies, obv the boomerang depends.

Good to know that one day BMW may work it out with the immobilizer being recognized by the insurance industry here. Like Picus, my annual rate only went up by about $100 annually too when going from an '01.5 QX4 to my '06 330xi. Something like $17k difference in MSRP so I was pleasantly surprised even if they don't recognize immobilizer, BMW assist, etc... as of yet.
Edit: I would have had the alarm installed, but in mid-August the dealer told me they're not allowed by head office as at the time they were having compatibility issues between the siren and whatever version Progman was out. I never did end up going back to get it done, not sure if insurance will even recognize it. I'm just afraid that a software update will screw something up like bluetooth with is working perfectly right now.

First post!
I have an order in for a 335 coupe and I went to the insurance agent (ICBC) today to get a quote. $2M 3rd party liability $300 deductible for comprehensive $300 deductible for collision I am at the maximum discount rate and it looks like it will be about $2000 for one year. BTW, they did give me a small discount for the built-in immobilizer. What are others paying across the country? On a sidenote, is my understanding correct that the BMW Assist allows for stolen vehicle tracking through GPS? If so, would this not be an additional benefit? |

Your insurance co must like you. (I am sure they do); the database they pull their model info doesn't even include the immobilizer.
My price is the same, but I have $1000 deductible for comprehensive. |

Not sure what kind of driving records you guys have but here in Alberta, my insurance man quoted me $1200 with 500 deductable and 1million liabilty. Plus i save $72/month when i take off the collision and liabilty for 5 months of the winter, so really i am under $1000/yr. I also tried Royal Bank insurance for a quote and they gave $842/yr. Just got off the phone with them because i had to confirm such a low number and they did..??
I always thought Alberta was high for insurance but this is pretty good.. BMW 335I Spave Grey , Premium + Sports Package. |

I'm 27, wife is 39; no accidents, tickets, both went to drivers school. The reason we're over $1500 is we moved to Ontario from California, so have no insurance record of relationship in Canada yet (well, for a year now). Cheers.

I'm 26, not married... a few pretty bad speeding tickets on record and I'm paying ~$2700/year with taxes.

Good point, I should probably look further into increasing my deductibles. Despite jumping companies a couple of times for a better rate I've pretty much been paying around $200/month for insurance since I was 16 years old... so I guess I'm used to it.
