Milage comparison
Comparing the EPA milage numbers between the 328i and the 335i (how much do you sacrifice to get more power?), taking the data from the BMW NA site (under 3 Series - Technical), it appears that mileage is the same: city/highway = 20/29 for a manual transmission.
I know numbers vary and that's not my concern, but can it be that the twin-turbo motor is so efficient (I drove a 335i Coupe w/ 6 speed and it has gobs of torque at low RPM) that it sips fuel as cheaply as the non-turbo'd motor? I raise all this because I am about to get an E91. I understand it might be available as a 335i Sport Wagon with March construction. Very interesting. |

I'm averaging 18 in my 335i, mostly highway Seems okay to me but I can't imagine how folks are getting low mid 20's unless you are driving really conservatively.

In my 328 E92, I get around 21-22 in city and close to 30 on highway. Works for me!

Just wish they'd release pricing on the 335xi so I could get this ball rolling. |

I'm getting 21.0 mpg on the trip computer and ~20.5 by my own calculations.
My commute is 10 miles, 6 turns and 26 stoplights each way. I do tend to drive, let's say "strategically" because I see no need to tear away from a stoplight only to have to step on the brakes a few seconds later. If I see a red light up ahead, I'll coast up to it, and If I see green, I'll goose it - all to to avoid having to stop completely. This car rolls so smoothly and effortlessly, once it gets moving, it doesn't need much gas to keep it there. Though I do occasionally step on it for fun, or necessity (after all, I didn't buy a 335 for the gas mileage)

I get 14-15 city and 29-30 highway. About 16mpg combined. I use the car mostly to go to work, city driving.

I average 25-26MPG combined, 335 e92 coupe. I drive typical combination city/hw Phoenix, AZ roads. I beat the shit out of it going on on-ramps, and from lights, but religiously use cruise in 6th gear at all other times.
FWIW, I averaged 16MPG in my S4, driving the same way. _Scott PS - I haven't road-tripped it yet, but would expect somewhat higher numbers based on the "all highway" counts. Also, my average MPG on the computer always seems to read a couple MPG higher than my actual calculation at the pump, which those numbers are based on. |

I get 16 MPG on average. I drive I would say 50/50. One half being spirited driving and the other normal, cruising.

If you baby it, the 335i gets great mileage, but if you drive it to it's potential it gets ~18mpg or less. Pretty typical of any modern performance engine in this class if not much better due to the turbo design. Still, all of those newtons aren't free. My S54 engine was very similar in power/performance and moderately worse in fuel consumption under the same non-highway conditions..... 5-6mpg less under optimal highway driving. This pushing a lighter car, too.

But honestly, my MINI MCS would get 18 when I ran around out in the country.... The more you push, the more it drinks. I just recently got over the break-in. I'm sure I'll see something different on my upcoming vacation...

I'm getting like u are 18 city & apprx. 27 highway. I believe most people are going by car computer & not accurate. Good old fashion way will tell u the exact numbers. Set computer to 0 & fill up. Drive to empty & fill up. Take the miles & divide it by amount of gals. of gas. That will tell u your correct mileage, most are not doing this. |

edgary - you're right, oil prices look weak here. I am still astounded that the bigger motor -if driven conservatively-can match the base motor in terms of mileage.
uncleozzy - you're looking for a 335xi, correct? Have I missed something? Will they match up the xi drivetrain to the twin-turbo motor? If they do, I bet they won't follow through to make a 335xi Sport Wagon. The Coupe and the Sedan, I could see (volume sellers). Hmmm...a 335i Sport Wagon... |
