E46 Engine?

Sorry for the noob question, I've looked but couldn't find anything definitive. Is the engine in the '06 330i the same as in the e46 330? If so, why can't those parts be used ie., udp, cams, etc? Thanks for your help.

It's not the same.

e90 = N52
e46 = M54

Really?! Ok, thanks. Surprising that they used a new engine since they already had a 3.0L in the inventory. What are the differences?

Block/heads, vanos, cam, materials used to build it, etc. They pretty much are completely different from each other. Id still like to see someone swap in an e46 m3 motor and toss an hpf kit on it.

The N52 block is made from magnesium and aluminum, for lighter weight. It also uses valvetronic technology in addition to Vanos.
