Top Speed Limiter Option Explained? (US)

Proud new owner of a Deep Sea Blue F10, with a bunch of options, to include the ZSP Sport package which includes the "increased top speed limiter".

I figured this meant the car's normal 155mph limit could be exceeded and was somehow raised to a new limit through software etc. My local rep said the speed limiter was due to additional body styling which allowed higher speeds or some nonsense. I can't buy that, because for as long as I can remember BMWs have been capped at a factory 155mph right off the factory line - and I don't believe there's any different body style for the F10 for "faster speed" (to include any aero or MSport body kit.

So whats the real deal here? Anyone?

i think for sport package you get 19" wheels with high performance tires that will allow u to travel at the speed of 155mph. Without the sport package, the car should be limited to around 130mph (some fellow members may be more precise) due to lower rating tires than the ZSP's.
the bodywork shouldn't have an effect of your speed at that level.

Your local rep doesn't know what he's talking about and he deserves to be called on it.

Several years ago, BMW, Daimler Benz, Audi, VW, etc. signed a "pact" to limit the from-the-production-facility top speed of their vehicles to 155. Porsche did not participate.

This was in response to environmentalists such as the Green Party who were concerned about the demise of German forests.

You get the higher Top Speed limiter because the Tires on that package are rated for use at that speed. It has nothing to do with bodywork. I'm surprised they did'nt tell you that it includes 200 MPH tape on that package....the same thing NASCAR uses.

Body work the ZSP is no different than the others. Besides, even for M-Sport, new bumpers aren't going to improve aerodynamics to allow for such a significant increase in maximum speed. The ZSP cars have traditionally been upped from 130mph to 155mph due to better tires, as a few others have stated. Both ZSP and the M Sport will be 155mph.

This must be a US thing. In the EU, the tyre speed rating must be higher than the maximum speed of the car. Even the EU standard 17" tyres can handle 155 mph so all cars have that limit set.

Not sure if it is US thing, I believe cars with 130mph limiter still have W rated tyre.

I live in Germany but have a US spec F10 550i and can confirm that it will do 160mph or my speedo is off. As an additional comment, the reason to spend this much money becomes apparent at that speed. It may go faster I dont recall it being pegged.
