n55 Tuning Update #2

Currently running our 2011 DCT equipped 135 at 14-15psi on 91oct pump gas. Ah, the beauties of timing control A few things we noticed so far:
-The factory turbo wont be able to hold much more than 12-13psi at 7000rpm in 100% stock trim. Even with 100% wastegate DC. Intake and exhaust upgrades should help. Until then, we are running things a bit more conservative with max boost in the low end/mid range at 14-15 and tapering to 11-12psi by redline.

-DCT Transmission is incredible. Even at this moderate tune-only state, the 135 feels about as quick as a fully bolt-on equipped n54 car with 6AT or 6MT. I can see this car put down some alarmingly good 1/4 mile times.

-v4 Boost control+DCT is a match made in heaven. With boost target always close to boost actual, the DTC shifts solidly and quickly exactly when you want it to. Great fun.

-Even at this boost level, no codes, tuner or otherwise.

For those who care about the tech details, yes, we have full v4 control. That means full logging (oil temp, ignition advance, map1, map2, MAF freq, actual throttle blade, etc.), CANclear, code reading/clearing, Vishnu Control Center, etc,. Basically, we are coming out of the gate with a full proper tune. Not a first-to-market quasi-tune.

Below a datalog of one of our recent test runs. You can see how quickly the transmission shifts gears. And how no boost is lost when doing so. Pretty amazing. Can't say too much more at this point. But perhaps we'll post some more videos later this week demonstrating how far along we are. I promised we would get up to speed quickly with the n55, didn't I?

Cheers

Will do. The tune is essentially done. Just waiting for the harness components

Looks good! I can imagine a number of people in Europe also being interested in that.

I assume the speed limiter is also deactivated?

Shiv : any chance for the existing Vishnu V4 users to upgrade the harness to be N55 compatible and use the current Vishnu Rev II module ??? , or there is some module design changes as well ..

Certainly. The same Rev.2 unit is used in the n55 and n54 applications. Just a simple harness change. More details will be posted once we have harnesses in stock and ready to go.

I haven't disabled the speed limiter in our car yet but it shouldn't be an issue. So far, we've just been focusing on the tuning. And, by most measures, it's at the same level of development/stability as our 4 year old n54 tunes.

Shiv, its all great news! Im very hapy to see the progress. Ive got two questions though, as I own a 6MT N55. How tricky (or not) do you think it will be to keep the boost up on a manual trasmission? The other questios is if there will be a way around the cruise control stick interface...as I do not have one :/

That's great news about the codes, but do you think they added any additional ways of detecting tunes, maybe codes stored somewhere else. I would be surprised it BMW didn't add any "new" way to detect tunes since they seems to really want to stop tuners.

How would the N55 take to the addition of methanol?

Cool coolest.

It sounds like with bolt-ons and a mod to the stock turbo, we might see north of 400 WHP w/o meth.

Here's a silly ?: Could the N55 exhaust manifold, turbo, dps, and exhaust be bolted on to an N54 so we could get set up for a modded single?

What mod is this? If you mean a new turbine wheel or clipping, or porting, ... maybe. But it will be at the sacrifice of low end torque.

It's only silly because the N55 exhaust manifold and turbine housing are ONE PIECE. In order to upgrade/change the turbo on an N55, you will have to also develop an alternative exhaust manifold.

Sounds like the first shop to develop a catless downpipe for the N55 will have some eager customers wanting to push beyond the 12-13psi range near redline...

PROcede + DCT looks like fun

Yeah, but with a tune the gearing on these cars makes too much low end torque a minus versus a plus...can't stay hooked up in 1st or 2nd.

Clipping and porting are good.

Don't you think the stock N55 exhaust manifold could be fitted with an adapter flange or cut it and weld on a flange to accept a gt40 or similar? That would still be a LOT cheaper and less tricky than fabbing an exhaust manifold from scratch.

Finally, an update... And my primary question is:

Will users, like myself who had the V4 on the 335, be able to trade in the old harness for the new harness, or will we have to pay for the new harness? How will this be handled?

Sounds awesome! So you like the DCT huh? I've been thinking about taking one for a spin lately but I'm such an MT guy I keep telling myself that I won't like it. Is it good enough to convert you, Shiv? Keep up the great work!
