Exhaust louder without tune?
I have BMW PE. I set it to stock map before service and the exhaust was noticeably louder at low rpm. Can anyone explain this please?

Something to do with tunes and how they go about controlling the wastegates.

I could be completely wrong but if I had to guess the turbos are pushing much less PSI so the resulting muffling affect from the turbos is decreased.

My AE got noticably quieter after my tune install, I know because my wife thinks I removed the exhaust and was happy. Also, my friend's Bastuck was also quieter with his tune.
However, sound came back once I got the DP's installed, AE + AR sounds soo soo good

In stock form, the wastegates are open to combat rattling wastegates. This could be attributed to increased noise. As according to my understanding, tunes keep the wastegates closed at idle to increase boost response.

Newer releases of DME software updates have a pre-emptive change to wastegate function to prevent actuator arm rattle. Essentially, the new software keeps the wastegates wide open at lower rpm. This is why the exhaust sounds louder. It does not get muffled by the blades of the turbine.
When you install a tune, this changes as the tune takes over wastegate control and improves it to an even better state than the old BMW software for better response. Depending on the build date of your car, there is a retrofit to restore original wastegate function as well. |
