Calling all 6MT N54s - assistance with a quick test
I'm trying to isolate an issue on my car and was thinking of asking some of you for assistance, especially those with Wavetrac LSDs installed, but would Like the stock diff guys to chime in as well.
Here's a quick and simple test: 1) Get the car coasting at about 100km/h (speed isn't important just need the car rolling for a 20-30 secs) 2) Press the clutch pedal to the floor (disengaging clutch) and HOLD it there 3) Grab the shifter and start moving it up/down from 3rd to 4th gear and back. Try not to pause in neutral, just pull and push as quickly as possible between these two gears and when doing this and don't lift your foot off the clutch pedal. On my car every time i go down into 4th from 3rd it'll thump in the rear as if somthing hit the floor in the trunk (not if I go slower pausing for a half sec in neutral). Note, it's not isolated to 3rd-4th gear upshift. You could do 1-2 or 2-3 or or 3-4 or 4-5 (less loud). I can't hear it on 5-6. Downshifting never thumps... Greatly appreciated.. |

In the three years I have owned my car it has never done that. However I don't have an LSD.

I'll try it for sure this afternoon on my way to Bandimere for a few runs and report back.
That sure is some strange behavior you are mentioning. Hope it gets resolved in short order as I know you have been dealing with it a bit. |

I have a 2007 e92 coupe with 6mt and a Quaife LSD. I tried this and get a mild thump. It is very mild when actually driving, even with a quick 3rd to 4th shift. I also get the mild thump when I am at a stop and throw it quickly into 1 or R- but not if i slow the process down a bit. I hear the thump while going into 1 or R is quite "normal" and luckily not too annoying. Not sure about the 3rd to 4th shift. Luckily the driving transformation makes up for the noise. I did a core diff exchange so not sure what could be wrong and since I hear from Kevin Bird that this sound is "normal without detrimental effects on the car" I have given up for now looking for a solution. May even be related to slack? Not sure if diff oil can affect this noise. Hope the boards reveal some answers to this minor annoyance of a problem for me and others. Maybe we can get Kevin Bird and other diff experts to help us.

Interesting, thanks..if you get your rear seats out you'll hear/feel it a lot more...
With the rear seats back in the car I can't feel any vibration whatsoever..I'm stumped yet again..thump is still there with the above test but in regular driving can't hear/feel it with the rear seats in their place.. Wonder how many of those that have LSDs ever drove their cars with rear seats out Last edited by dzenno; 09-27-2010 at 03:21 PM.. |

Do you have the stiffer M3 subframe mounts? Or the marshmallow OEM ones.
