Annoying reflections from dashboard
Reading different forums and reviews about the BMW F10, i have never seen anyone mention the annoying reflections from the dashboard. In a car without headup display. When driving against the sun the bumps where the headup display is supposed to be installed gives the most annoying reflections right in front of your eyes.
Its so annoying and distracting when driving, that I actually spend more time thinking why on earth the bump in the dashboard, for a feature i haven't ordered should ruin my driving experiens. Don't get me wrong I like the car and everything else about, but if I had known this error from the start I would't have bought it. Am I the only one who find this reflections annoying and distracting? Is there anything one can do? Last edited by rka; 09-15-2010 at 11:40 AM.. |

No protection ... You can actually see the problem on this photo from BMW:
Look at the reflection in front of the driver when you look out the window. This box in front and in eyeline comes from the bump where the head up display should be if ordered. Very annoying and distracting. Last edited by rka; 09-15-2010 at 11:40 AM.. |

The reflection is a small price to pay for the heads up system itslef. At least in my opinion. It is distracting in bright sunlight but I always wear shades so its not a problem. I dont think there is any fix as of yet but maybe there will be something in the future. The F10 is only about 4 months out so give it a little time...

I don't have my 535 yet and didn't drive the demo car in direct sunlight so that's all I can say until I do so. I understand your annoyance and I'm somewhat concerned that I might have the same problem as I didn't specify the HUD. Has anybody else noticed this problem? |

I thought non-HUD cars came with a black cover over the aperture and I would find any windscreen reflections significantly distracting. I'll be keen to check the car on arrival; trouble is that now I've read this thread, I'll find one whether or not it's there |

This has the potential to be very annoying. So it could be the case that all F10's, with or without HUD, are afflicted with windscreen reflections. I have opted for HUD on my car and was certainly not expecting segments of the dashboard to be projected too!! |

My F10 does have the HUD. I can see the reflection of the dash screen in the front window. It's not a huge deal for me, but it's there.

Seriously though, it's something of justifiable concern and I'll be looking hard when I get my 535. |

Heres some more on the problem : http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho....php?p=5429807 "I just purchased a new 535i for my wife and the reflection from the top of the dash onto the windshield is driving her crazy." |

I like their "solution" of wearing polarized sunglasses. Sure it'll help with the reflections but will make the HUD almost invisible. Ask me how I know....

How do you know? I test drove a car with HUD on a sunny early afternoon in Cali. I noticed the reflection and put on my Serengeti Polarized glasses - no reflection and I could still see the projected image just fine. Could it be that at a certain time, sunlight, and angle there is no problem and at other times there is? I'm interested in hearing your experience because I had already dismissed this as a potential problem thinking that all I have to do is to wear my sunglasses.
Are there any bothersome windshield reflections at night from the instrument panel and/or other sources? |

I almost always notice at least some reflection from the dash when it's sunny outside. It's only somewhat annoying to me if it's really bright. Rest of the time, I don't care that much.
My polarized sunglasses really cut down on the brightness of the HUD pretty significantly. Because of that, I wear non-polarized sunglasses in the F10. |

I have that reflection wich is annoying me very bad in some situations.
The solution is the polarized sunglasses and lucky me, i don't have the HUD I have the Oyster coloured superior dash. |

Is this really a big issue with the F10? Don't a lot of cars have reflections if the sun is a certain brightness, angle, etc.?
I've heard this over the years for all sorts of cars, some which I've driven, but never had any issues myself. I'll pay particular attention when I'm in one on Satutrday, but previous drives in the F10, I'd not noticed any thing more than I'd get with my current 3-series. BTW, I just went out and checked the 3-series this morning and to my surprise, if I really look, there is a reflection of the top vents in the screen. I've been driving the car for 4-years. Now I'll have to do something about it. HighlandPete |
