Very stubborn shift from D to S

Anyone else experience this? The first time I try to shift the gear lever sideways from D to S I have to force it very, very hard to the extent I'm worried about snapping it. I need up to 5 seconds of force or banging for it to move. Once that first shift is done during a drive everything moves smoothly the way it's supposed to. It's not related to cold engine or tranny. Even if I've been driving for an hour or so that first attempt at moving the lever is always a gamble. Is there actually a mechanical connection to the tranny or is it all fly-by-wire?

Sport Auto transmission on a Euro 523i.

Um, do you mean move the auto shifter from auto to manual mode by sliding it to the left? (For left hand drive cars).

Definitely not right; get it back to the dealer.

I have no such problems, guessing you might have a mechanical issue.

Yes and no. I mean the slide to the left but that doesn't automatically trigger manual mode. It triggers automatic sport mode. If you shift left and then move it up or down OR use the paddles you'll be in manual mode.

So it's the +/- functions that are sticking?

The + / - movements are always fine. It's moving the lever from right to left that's the issue. Sorry I can't think how to write that any more clearly.

That should be effortless. I wouldn't use that function till the dealer checks it out.
