My 550 engine failure after 900 miles
Sucks, I love driving Alpine White 550. My car had engine failure after 900 miles . I should be getting my car back from the dealership today (it has been there 3 days now)

What was the problem? Can you be a little bit more specific?

Engine failure sounds disheartening to me - I just ordered my Alpine White 550. When I think of engine failure I think of internal component destruction e.g., hole in a piston, broken valves, melted bearings, etc. Is that the kind of failure you are talking about? . . or did the car just quit without any awful metal grinding noises and a puddle of oil on the ground.

"Engine failure" sounds pretty ominous. It's a term I'd be inclined to use only if it resulted in pistons flying through the hood or some other equally drastic scenario. What were the symptoms? Any warning signs?

i was driving my car and the screen warning said "engine failure" and advised me to reduce speeds. At speeds lower then 15 miles per hour my car was shaking and jolting.
I got the car back today and everything seems to be fine. They replaced the faulty exhaust vanos solenoid and reinstalled intake to correct position. Also, they replaced the Y connector for the ipod. |

VANOS is BMW's variable valve timing. It changes the position of the cam to activate the valves depending on engine speed. The solenoid activates the positioning of the cam. It is electronic and controls the oil pressure to the cam. Keyword: electronic.
After they replaced it, they likely reset the intake position sensor. I can't remember if the V8 is valvetronic or not (I'm thinking not) but it might have to do with that. Don't forget, a lot of these technical terms are translated from German into English and the meaning can sometimes get comfusibulated. Glad you got your car back, OrangeFruit712.
