Fuel range in F10 versus 2003 E39 530i

So I just filled up the F10 with petrol and at full the trip computer states a range of 392 miles. This is fine, except my older E39 530i gave a range of 490 n fillup - 100 more miles.

This seems a bit odd, as the F10 is touted as being more fuel efficient, etc. I also looked up the petrol tank sizes. For the F10 it says 18.5 gal. For the E39, the owners manual mentions an 18.5 gal tank, and a 2 gal reserve (so is that really a 20.5 gal tank?)

So perhaps the F10 carries less fuel - that might explain the difference. What about the F10's engine, is it thirstier? Does the single turbo help drain the petrol quicker?

So many questions!

Most vehicles, and I am sure that the F10 is no exception, will experience better fuel economy after the engine is broken in. I am not talking about the first 1,000 kms, but more like after 5,000 kms. How many kms have you clocked so far. Perhaps others with more kms/miles on their F10 engine can chime in?

Why are you judging it on the range? As that is a rolling calculation and will only be reflecting the previous few miles distance driven, at most, not the long term average. Could be skewed by a bit of heavy driving, ahead of the fill. Drive easy for a few miles and that could shoot up.

535i is very fuel efficient for what it is performance wise.

An '02/'03 530 is going to get better gas mileage than '11 535. An '02 530 6spd is rated at 30 mpg hiway. I've had one since it was new and the mpg performance has never ceased to amaze me.
Now, in-so-far as mpg goes, an '11 528 is whole different story.

I get over 400 miles easy on 1 tank of gas....actually I'm pretty sure I can go over 500 miles on the highway but haven't tried it yet. I'd say I'm consistently around 450 miles before the low fuel light comes on, and that's w/only 1300 miles on the car.

I have a 2003 530i and have ordered the new 535i. As far as I know, the tanks are the same size. Anytime I have filled the 03 when nearly down to no miles, I have never put in more than 18 plus gallons of gas, so I really don't know where an additional 2 gallons would be hinding or why I can't use them. Now on the subject of range. Whenever I filled up the car, the initial range would always be more conservative than the reality of running through the last tank. The computer has algorithms that calcualtes the range on averages, not necesarilly what you just got. As you accumulate miles, you will probably see that the initial Range number starts to increase. Trust me, the new 535 will get better gas mileage than the E39 530. Nothing radical, but it should be a couple of MPG better overall. Keep in mind that is pretty good considering the weight gain of the car.
