Smile Turbocharged M3?

Hi Guys

This is my first post, so go easy on me!!

The new 335i uses a couple of small turbochargers with some spectacular results - BHP and especially torque.

Wouldn't mind your opinions on the possibility of a bit of light turbocharging on the new M3's V8. If you look closely through the front grille of the spyshots there appears to be a black radiator where you would expect to see it and also a smaller lighter coloured radiator under it. Could this be an intercooler?!?!

Any thoughts?

I highly doubt that the M3 will have any form of Turbocharge.

The reason is that BMW has always defined an M Car as one with a high-revving, naturally aspirated engine, and a manual transmission. I doubt they will leave this formula... also, the Audi RS4 is Naturally Aspirated, so this will be further incentive for BMW to go with a naturally aspirated power plant to beat Audi even more and on an equal playing field.

Have a look at the way this retrofit intercooler has been fitted to this blown 3 series.

Attachment 15777

Now have a look through the front grille of the E90 M3.

Attachment 15778

Might go against the M Car ethos if it is blown, but you cannot deny there is an additional cooler lurking behind the grille.

Yeah I've noticed it too and have mentioned about it couple of weeks ago. I would love to see a powerful engine with enormous torque on the M3 but turbo charging is against the high revving M concept. But that radiator sure looks like a turbo intercooler! Sometimes I wonder if the M3's engine could be a stronger version of the new 3.0lt twin turbocharged engine because we all now that BMW can pull out easily 400 hp considering the NA version is 265 hp already and from their experiences in the 3.0 diesel engine delivering 282hp!!
Still I think BMW will stick to NA engine as its their expertise area.

Well I just read in Automobile magazine that BMW is puting out six new engines next year. Two different inline sixes ( one of course is the 3.0 twin turbo) two different twin turbo V8's (and there not even for the M line) and two different turbo diesels. So with that being said , i think BMW is getting back into the turbocharging market.

The E46 M3 already has an oil cooler there. That may just be a larger one. Definitely not an intercooler.
