BMW Recall - USA Only
BMW USA has issued a recall for the High Pressure Fuel Pump.
BMW USA has extended the fuel pump warranty to 6 years, 120k miles. BMW Canada has done neither. Transport Canada has ZERO safety complaints about the BMW HPFP. If you are in Canada and drive a 335, 135 or 535, please do the following: 1 - Take 5 minutes and fill out the "Online Public Defects Form" - third link on the attached page. https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur...DPP/Index.aspx 2 - Call BMW Canada at 1-800-567-2691, press 1 for English, 0 for a live person. Register a complaint that BMW Canada has not extended the warranty or issue the recall like BMW USA has on the exact same car/issue. 3 - Forward this information to any other BMW owners with the same "35" engine and ask them to follow up, especially if they have had a fuel pump failure. You'll need your VIN for the Transport Canada complaint form. Only if we, Canadian BMW Owners, accumulate a critical mass of complaints will BMW Canada give us the same warranty and recall that BMW USA does. Please, follow up with BMW Canada and Transport Canada. Last edited by hubble bubble; 10-27-2010 at 09:02 PM.. |

I believe this is official in Canada now too. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Register a complaint!
I just registered a complaint with BMW and Transport Canada. I spoke to a fairly surly representative at BMW Canada. When I asked her if the US recall would be extended to Canada, she replied "It is a US only recall, we don't have further information". Then I asked her if BMW Canada at least acknowledged that there is a problem with the N54 HPFP, and got a sarcastic "Obviously there's no problem with the part if BMW Canada hasn't issued a recall". She was happy to take my complaint. I agree with the OP's assessment that owners of N54 engined vehicles need to register complaints with BMW Canada and Transport Canada if we hope to get something done here.

I would be happy to call even though I do not have an issue but I have the N55 engine which is still fairly new as other said there isnt enough data for the N55s.
How about if we inform ABC to do a Canadian version? But the thing is this is already in "The Star" so hopefully it will encourage everyone do report and or harass BMW. Edit: Looks like CBC posted the recall in their website! http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/201...mw-recall.html

It is the same defective part. Naturally BMW will fight until enough people complain. I would want them to come up with a permanent solution - whats good about replacing a defective part with another defective part that will soon fail?

IMHO, the only thing worse than having a part replaced with the same defective one is having to pay BMW ~$1000 to do it. This is really about principle to me though. That BMW Canada has the audacity to pretend there's no problem leaves me with a very bitter taste in my mouth. It's the sort of thing that would influence whether I buy another one in the future. It's a shame because apart from this crap, this is far and away the best car I have ever owned....

The problem is with a part, the fuel pump, supplied by an external contractor, Siemens. Is it a design flaw? Is Seimens responsible? Who knows. I've heard of lots of cars that don't have a problem, while others have had multiple fuel pumps replaced under warranty.
My fuel pump work great, for now. But if/when it goes, I don't want to have o cough up $1000+ to fix it. And I don't want the resale value going to crap because prospective buyers know it will need expensive fuel pump replacements. At the very least, BMW Canada needs to extend the warranty on the fuel pump. |

I got the same response and I've had a hpfp fail once already! There is no extended warranty on hpfp for us, no retrofit on oil coolers for us! BMW Canada has to step up! This is my 3rd BMW and it's going to be my last. I think it's time to switch. Mercedes v12 biturbo time!

Filled out the form and contacted my SA. Will call BMW Canada already. I've got three HPFP issues on my file, one HPFP replacement at 4000 km, and a failed HPFP recently in July of this year. BMW Canada has documented my HPFP problems since the start so I've got a good long filed list of complaints with the HPFP (I managed to get them to promise me a HPFP warranty of 10 years too...)
Will follow up with them on Monday and let you guys know what happens. Conveniently, I have a 7:30 am appointment at BMW Toronto for them to figure out how to reprogram my BMW Assist. Since I've got a loaner, I don't mind letting them keep it for longer to try to get something with the recall. Will update this thread on Monday... |

Last week, I sent angry emails to every BMW Canada e-mail I could find. Barb Pitblado, Director, Corporate Communications, replied back very quickly and said that BMW Canada was going to issue coverage in Canada parallel to the BMW USA recall and extended warranty. On her word I didn't mail an angry letter to Franz Jung. This afternoon, BMW Customer Service just took my VIN and confirmed on the phone - 6 years or 200,000 km on fuel pump replacement or reprogramming.
I will wait until I see it in writing (I have worked with too many lawyers) but kudos for Barb and BMW Canada. Last edited by hubble bubble; 11-01-2010 at 08:55 PM.. |
