Poor radio reception: reverb-like sound and garbled words
On 12-23-09 we took our new 535xi, with M package, to a dealership and had the fuel pump replaced. While there they did a computer update.
The ticket says this: j# 2 90BMZLC551 program cntrl units, Units: 1.1 Tech(s) :353 sib 12 23 09: Svce action, program cntrl units, DME (OBD) DC: 00 12 81 02 00...LC: refer to KSD per service action Programmed all control units to current software levels per service action We think this is when the radio reception started sounding poor. On occasion it sound very much like we have reverb or the person speaking is stuttering or words are repeated. Some stations just have static. This is not always happening, but it is often problematic. It does not happen in our other cars. On 9-17-2010 we had it in to the shop again. They did other repairs and I asked them to look at the radio. They said they could not duplicate the echo (or reverb-like qualities). I believe they did another software update while they had it: D SIB 13-09-10 Cause: 0059613 SIB 13-09-10 SA N54 Prog Control Units (DME for HDP) 325 WWB FC: 0013950100 No window tinting was done. No window heating is on. It used to sound fine... Other audio features work fine. Isn't the radio supposed to ignore a station if the quality/reception/signal strength is too low? Could the work replacing the fuel pump have affected the wiring or connections? Is any radio antenna wiring involved in a harness that goes to or near the fuel pump? Any thoughts?

Did they try to after-marked tint your windows? I have a friend that did that himselves, ended up with loosing the GPS signal. The antenna is in the window, so he cut it with the knife when fitting the window tint.
I see you lost your window-heater too. Maybe they were a little quick with the knife at the shop, discovered what they did and then removed the plastic-film again?? Is your GPS working? |

I've noticed the same and I think I know why. I am in a fringe reception area and have noticed that the radio will switch from HD (digital) radio to Analog reception, and viz versa, when driving around. During the momentary switch over period voices on the radio can sound hollow or like they are echoing around a big cave or something.
I turned off HDRadio in settings and the problem goes away... to be replaced by the usual analog fade in/out when signal is poor. Try turning off HD in your settings and see if that makes a difference. You can tell if the radio is receiving HD or analog by looking for the HD symbol in the top right status box in the navigation window (which I normally have visible while driving). DAK |

It is a 2010 xi and we signed the papers on it on 9-21-2009. It already had 5700 miles on it.

Thanks. I'm new to Bimmers... Still don't get why mine was sold as a 2010 and yet is an E-60. Also, how do you know? Because F-10 xi's came out much later?
Turning off the HD did the trick as far as the reverb-like sound quality.
