Clutch Chatter, dealer replaces Transmission

Thread title pretty much gives it away... I went it for oil change and air filter change. I know the clutch chatter is normal, but I wanted to see what they would say about it. Mechanic comes in with me, we test drive the car and he says that a couple of 335 do it and that they'll most prolly just change the transmission oil.

In my head, I was like wtf, transmission oil change and clutch chatter, really?! Anyhow, I called them a couple of days later, and they told me that their transmission expert says that it's the transmission and that they are going to replace it under warranty. I am maybe expecting the car today but I have the impression that I'll be getting a call saying that they replaced it but that the noise is still there..

Interesting. I do have stock clutch and I do have a clutch chatter when the car is in neutral. If I press the clutch in, the chatter disappears. I have no problems whatsoever with the transmission!

Car has just under 18K miles.

Same thing as me. My car has 40k miles... Transmission was really smooth, all gears when went in like butter. Anyhow, I just called them, it's ready. Can't wait to see if it's gone.

Very interesting. I am wondering what could be causing clutch chatter noise in an otherwise smooth shifting transmission. Could it be an excessively worn out or defective input shaft?

I have been hearing a light chatter when I shut off my car since day 1. Could this be something similar I wonder?

Q: What causes clutch chatter?
A: A high coefficient of friction, bad motor mounts, an incorrectly machined flywheel or faulty pressure plate, spring-centered race disc (aggravates chatter), and contamination (oil, grease, or rust).

Chatter is basically the engine winding up in the mounts as the clutch is engaging and then bouncing off the mounts, disengaging the clutch for a brief moment before engaging again and winding up again. No matter how aggressive a clutch is that would normally chatter severely on a normal street car, it generally won't chatter at all on a car with solid mounts and a rigid disc because there is no wind-up effect.

I'm going to pick it up now. I'll let you guys know if it's fixed or not.

Mine does this too if I turn the engine off with the clutch pedal not depressed (i.e., in neutral). If I press the clutch pedal in (in gear or neutral) and turn the car off, no noise. I was told it's normal.

^^ your case is normal....atleast in every MT bmw i've driven does this.

My E46 had much much worse clutch chatter when it got hot. I only notice the 335 doing it when i'm going really slow in traffic or parking etc...

I've taken my car in twice so far to the dealer about this. Every time I get a mechanic to ride with me in the car and I make them listen. Two different mechanics told me that this chatter is normal for dual mass flywheels.

My old is300 had a trans replaced for chatter under a tsb. Apparently, throw out bearings cause problem too, as that was the culprit in mine that for whatever reason caused them to replace the tranny.

Interesting. I wasn't too worried, but the noise is definitely there... and now that I think of it you're right, if the clutch is depressed there's no chatter @ shut-off.

Indeed, the Eclipse had chatter during idle as well and it was definitely due to the throw out bearing... drove just fine and wouldn't chatter if I remembered to let the clutch out slowly (while in neutral).

Didn't it crossed their mind to replace the CLUTCH and flywheel ?

I'm sure your tranny was barely used as well Some people's HPFP is barely used and still not working...it's not about wear, it's about defects.

Question

OP, what did you have to do to get them to replace the tranny?

I was told yesterday that they were dropping the transmission, now they're telling me that the chatter is normal. Wonder why on the phone yesterday they said their shop foreman is looking into it and mentioned how he knows what's going on...?

haha. the flywheel chatter!
They said it's normal.
I took my car into the dealership about a year and a half ago and complained about the rattle when the car is in neutral and goes away when clutch is pressed.
To make a longer story short, they replaced the clutch hoping to get rid of the noise.
Unfortunately, it's still there and it didn't make any difference whatsoever.
Rattle noise is still there and my car is in normal operation and so far (knock on wood) I haven't had any issues with it.

I'm just really baffled as to why are the dealership keep replacing parts when they're really not certain about it resolving the issue? Or better yet, why do they even try to repair it if it really is normal behavior of the car??

The clutch chatter is "normal" persay.

I have seen the throwout bearings wear out pre maturely causing a clicking/pinging noise with the clutch pedal not depressed. But we have never replaced a transmission for a clutch chatter. Idk how they got away with that one.
