No Boost - waste gate actuator?

So on my way home from the caps game - I noticed my car was slow. I've noticed it a few times today but it was obvious this time. I had a more throaty sound and i couldn't build boost past like 3-5 psi. Is this probably an issue with my wastegate staying shut?

If the wastegate stayed shut, it would build as much boost as possible until basically the turbo self destructs.

DV vaccum lines are good. DV's are secure. All Vaccum lines look ok. I put the Proceed in valet mode and drove with the BT cable and the duty cycle for the wastegate actuators was fine which is why it isn't throwing any codes i'm sure. because of the extra exhaust sound, I'm really wondering if one of the little bastards is just stuck open. The rear one seems fine, but I cant get to the front one to feel it. Are there any tricks to this?

Bummski.

I have had some wastegate issues myself. Is your code a 30FE or 30FF? Mine was frequently sticking closed and giving me throttle closure/overboost codes.

No fun...hopefully the dealer can get it fixed without causing too many other problems!

To be honest with you, I was so pissed I just threw the BT tool on to make sure I didn't have any codes i didn't want.... I didn't write them down. It was one of those... 30fe or 30ff... whichever one said exhaust flap low pressure side....

I'm back in a loaner... for life...

Just got the email from my SA - It's the wastegate Actuators. Apparently they are only going to change the actuators and not the whole turbo assembly. Is this the norm now? Either way, as long as I see more than 3psi of boost I'll be happy......

Did you go back to stock before you brought the car in for service?

Wastegate failures seem to be becoming more common lately on this forum for some reason. Luckily the dealer will probably take care of it for you!

I went in with nothing but a DCI and a boost gauge. I have an extremely cool SA... I've had it in before with a tune on it, but for stuff like this that could be big I take it out just in case a BMWNA rep is there.

I knew it was a waste gate problem because the exhaust note got pretty loud and low... because it was stuck open and lots of exhaust gas was bypassing the turbine and going straight into the downpipes. I also was not getting any more boost than 3psi so one turbo was spooling but the other wasn't... It felt like a 328i...

Does anyone know if replacing the actuators requires removing the turbos?

If the actuator is worn then no. If the wastegate sealing surface is sticking then I would think they would need to remove the turbos. They would be replacing the whole turbo then though I think.

Holy crapsicle - drop the engine? How long does the service take then? I suspect I have a wastegate issue too - very inconsistent boost from one day to the next (will be datalogging to find out as soon as the weather allows).

As for wastegate replacement, I thought it was an integral part of the turbo and couldn't be replaced separately. I was kinda hoping (if I do have a wastegate problem) to at least get some new turbos out of the deal...

The actual wastegate is part of the turbo. There is a little arm that sticks out the exhaust side of the turbo that pivots and actuates the wastegate next to the exhaust turbine outlet. That is connected to linkage and a vacuum/boost operated diaphragm that is the wastegate actuator.

I'm pretty sure that the rear actuator can be replaced with the engine in the car from the top. The front is a different story... that one is freakin hidden...
