335d 35k oil service + check price

Hi all,

Been quoted £192 for a oil change + filter and vehicle check if i supply my own oil.

About to order 9 litres of Fuchs Titan GT1 5-40 for £80.

Rang around for the same but without supplying oil. Hardly anything in it. Without ringing around again, how does this price compare and what's realistic amount to push to, to knock off.

As i only need a service every 2 years it works out around £136 a year which seems pretty good really.

Cheers

read on another BMW thread that this person had used this service & was well happy with it.

Not used it myself but I intend too as I reckon I will get my oil changed for £41.50 plus a bit extra for extra oil

http://www.national.co.uk/oil-vehicle-search.aspx just put your reg in & get a quote. Seems too cheap but did come reccomended.

Can't believe they can do it at that price! Crazy for them, great for us.

Unfortunately, i should have clarified. I have to take it to the dealer for my ever so expensive stamp... warranty.

As I am aware you don't need a main dealer service to maintain your warranty. I am sure any garage can service the car providing they use BMW approved parts.

That is true until 2012 i believe. Although good bye to any good will you might ever have got in the future, and they must be VAT registered and use genuine BMW parts.

Sounds a bit steep to me. Is that just an oil/filter change and the pollen/microfilter?

Might be worth getting a quote from an indy and getting your dealer to price match it?

Is that the specific BMW 'vehicle check' service item in addition to the oil service, or just 'a quick check while you're there'?? Dealers usually charge £90 ish for the 'vehicle check' which will come up on your i drive as a service item. They put it on the ramp, have a cup of tea, and take it off the ramp.

They'd charge you £15 a litre for the oil at a dealers, which is £90 for 6L so they should give you that discount when you bring your own, the fact they don't shows they are still taking the piss.

An good indy will only want 30mins for the oil & filter, so £20 - £40 plus the cost of your oil and £8 for the oil filter and they'll do a diagnostic check and reset while the oil drains.

Beware the National Tyres deal, AFAIK they won't use BMW LL04 Approved oil, so its not good if you want to keep to your long intervals.

You are buying the best in the Titan oil, don't put crap in it to save a few quid.

Yes mate it's an idrive vehicle check indicator as well as an oil service with oil filter

So they are charging me about £100 without the oil - i'll ring the local bmw specialist a ring and see how they compare.

Am i the only one, despite the pointless expensive vehicle check that thinks for a 2 year service interval, £180 for an oil change and filter isn't actually that bad.

I agree its not that bad for 2 years at all, especially as you are sayng it included the 2 yearly 'vehicle check' service, which is normally £90 ish on its own at a dealers.

If they are saying its almost the same if they provide the oil, then i'd take ther hand off TBH.

In your position you'll probably be better keeping the dealer stamp for resale value as you're servicing so infrequently the cost to you will be so low over time.

If they provide the oil it would be £330 so i'm saving quite a bit by supplying my own 9 litres of oil which is probably a better oil too.

Sorry, I thought you said in post 1 that you rang around and there was nothing in it whether you provided the oil or not?

Don't forget this isn't the only service.

You'll have both sets of pads too.
MOTs coming in shortly
The microfilter service
The aircon check service
The air filter replacement
The next vehicle check

All in the next 2 years most likely..

Do you honestly believe you will get 'good will' if you buy an oil service?

Plenty on here who bought a whole damed £40k of car, and get crap dealer support.

Was primed to get my car done here but then they tell me they don't have a "stamp" for the service book.

They can "write it in the book" but no official stamp.

Bit disappointed, was looking forward to this deal. My local indy has quoted me £130 all in for the oil service, bit more than £40!!!

Yeah, i see it first hand everyday. And we just dismiss a car that has non dealer service history.

Sorry mate i just mean't i'd rang around for prices which included the oil. All very similar. So i didn't bother ringing around for supply my own, would expect it to be similar again.

Just wondered if my quoted price was any good with much negotiation.

Think i'll take the indie price and ask if they can meet half way. Worth a shot

I know i have all the other bits to service as well. But still £136 a year basic for a 335d is decent in my eyes. My mrs has a 4x4 diesel toyota and even that is £125 first year and £150 second year for a basic oil service / filters etc and that's with a mates rates small discount at their garage.

Yes they do use the correct oil. See photo in thread below.

They stamped mine with an official stamp and gave me a printed receipt.

I did the original write-up here

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406804

As I said in the write-up I was pretty impressed with the setup, they were pleasant, cooperative and I have no relationship with them whatsoever other than as happy customer.

Well, we dont exactly hold them in high regard because so often independant garages do wrong CBS items at incorrect intervals, with non genuine parts, and then amazingly expect a main dealer to help them when the breather is blocked for example.

So is leaving the engine oil in for 2 years rather than 1 year better?

Its not expensive if you make the most of the 'complimentary' drinks, cakes, sandwiches magazines etc and take the piss. It actually works out quite well I've found.

Go on an empty stomach and while they are robbing you, get your moneys worth and empty the fridge.

Fair play - good write up. I suppose you could take your own filter if you really wanted to use a BMW one, they're only £8 and then you'd have the receipt for the BMW filter.

It's obviously a loss leader to get you in an then try to pursuade you you need new brakes, tyres and clutch.

I can see where your coming from, but how would you know its had a non BMW history if its spotless and perfectly maintained?

The indy I use attaches the BMW parts receipts with their own bill and I've never had any of the dealer problems such as oily hand prints over the engine and steering wheel, oil spill on the engine top, dirty floor covers left in the car etc etc which were always present with my old E90 after any BMW work.

A good specialist is almost sure to be ex-BMW with contacts at all the local dealers. In fact they are usually the BEST ex-BMW techs who couldn't stand the corporate/office bullshit and left to do what they do best - work on cars. This is my experience with good specialists, and my own brother who is now a BTCC chief mechanic from humble beginnings as a VAG Tech.

Also, recently I had around £2000 of warranty work done with no check of service history at all.
