CX Racing Intercooler Installed. Updated w/Dyno
EDIT: Updated dyno 3rd post. Add Ebay store link (not guarantee the link will be there long..it's Ebay ya' know!)
After being inspired by Big Tom and his KLRacing intercooler DIY, I also decided to try a less expensive alternative to the typical vendor offerings. Many people by now are familiar with the CX Racing RX7 intercooler you can get from them their website or Ebay store. The dimensions of the core are 18"x12"x3.5". It has 2.5" inlets. The IC area of several well known ICs are: Helix: 11917 cm3 Stett: 11470 cm3 HPF: 13357 cm3 AA: 11085 cm3 The stock IC is: 7620 cm3. CXRAcing IC is: 12388 cm3 Big Tom : 14217 cm3 The cost of the intercooler from CXRacing is $139 plus $35 shipping = $175 to your door. Silicon plumbing, connectors and clamps ran about $110. Parts list: 8 x T-Bolt Clamp for 2.5" Silicone Parts 1 x 2.5" Silicone 45° Elbow, Black 1 x 2.5" Silicone 90° Elbow, Black 2 x Stainless Steel Joiner, 2.5" 1 x 2.5" Silicone 2' Straight Hose, Black I've been asked several times what exact CXRacing IC I used. This is the Ebay link. Can't guarantee the link will work for very long, Ebay likes to expire these things after awhile. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=390097390029 CXRacing Website with more detail specs...don't buy from the regular site, it is much more expensive,. http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/merchant...ry_Code=IC35CO I wanted to have the IC attached with welded L brackets and attached to the bumper support so it would look professional and be solid. Since I was having Lutz Performance install my Eibach Pros/Koni Yellow/Exhaust, and they have a good fabricator on site to do the welding, I decided to pay the labor and have them do the install. So total for this entire setup with install was about $500 total. Since I had the exhaust and IC installed, I can tell the car is pulling harder now and is a touch quicker. I don't know how much though...I am going to dyno the car again in a few days and will post the results to see what the new numbers are. Anyway, onto the pics.

Dyno. Went back to the same dyno I used about 2 months ago. Temperature was about the same as last time.
Temperature: 74F Humidity: 80% Sea Level Mods: Drop-in filter CX Racing FMIC UR Catback Exhaust with Vibrant Resonators GIAC Stage 1 93 oct. from Chevron Overlay shows dyno before exhaust and FMIC. +18.38 RWHP +8.85 RWTQ I did a stock map pull also, I gained like 2whp and no TQ..not worth posting that one.

Well I like the fact that you didn't use Zip Ties to hold an intercooler on your BMW. It looks like those L shaped brackets were made to fit on the bumper support! Or did you weld those brackets on yourself?

Looks awesome! I was looking at the same one from eBay too. I'll be awaiting the dyno results.

Looks nice and great job done on that.
Do you feel any lag? Also, can you give us of what else we need beside CXRacing intercooler? Please... I'm planning to do the same as you as well. Thanks my man! |

Tabs added by Shawn Grawunde at Speed Fread Fabrication located with Lutz Performance. He does fab work etc...did the tabs/welding.
I requested the IC be mounted to the bumper support by some type of tabs welded to the IC. They just did what I asked and were creative. Quality install and work.

Lag? Just the normal lag of these size turbos....I have a GIAC flash, there is no lag from any of the DME version updates. They said they had enough parts/connectors for the job I supplied. 8 x T-Bolt Clamp for 2.5" Silicone Parts 1 x 2.5" Silicone 45° Elbow, Black 1 x 2.5" Silicone 90° Elbow, Black 2 x Stainless Steel Joiner, 2.5" 1 x 2.5" Silicone 2' Straight Hose, Black

Yeah...the shroud needed to be cut up pretty good. When I tried the install myself a few weeks ago..I was like, oh man..I don't want to break the dremel out, and I was on short ramps, it was tight...need a lift to really make the install easy. So I said let Lutz Perf handle that stuff...worth the few hundred in labor.
I took the bumper off today because the sensor that was on the shroud needed relocating...I put it in one of the shroud rectangle holes that is left just above the left side of the IC and zip tied it...very secure. Besides the shroud...no other trimming required. Just the attachment point to the bumper support. Thanks

Nice install! But the sizes that you presented is a bit inaccurate. Here's the correct sizes: CX Racing IC = 12388 cm3 KL Racing IC = 14158 cm3 Last edited by Big Tom; 11-20-2010 at 09:26 PM.. |
