Oil draining question
Hello and greetings to all. I am the new owner of an '11 M3 but no stranger to BMW's.
I have been reading the stickies about oil change routines but dont understand the logic in driving the rear wheels up on ramps. As I understand, the e90 has a central front plastic jack point and two front side jack points (what do these look like, by the way?). The problem, it seems is that a lot of jacks cant get to the central jack point. Why not just raise one front side point (as I do on other cars), get under the car, remove the two drain plugs, then lower the car back to the ground. Wait for the oil to drain ( about 4 beers worth), repeat the process and install the drain plugs. Thats sounds like the easiset way to me. I didnt see anyone doing that. Am I missing something? |

The car should be level as the oil drains. If you can get the plugs out safely by jacking one side, and then get a sufficiently large receptacle under the lowered car, then that will work, but I doubt that either is easily accomplished. The reason for raising the rear is just to get it level with the front, which would also be raised. The four jacking points are clearly visible along the outside frame rail, approximately under each end of the door. To reach the front, central jacking point, you will need to drive on a low ramp. I use a wood ramp that is only about 4” high. With a low profile race jack, it reaches fine from the front of the car.
