Paint protection

Taking delivery in March and wondering if its worth spending the money and having one of the many Paint Protection waxes applied?

Various companies offer this service including BMW. Has anyone else done this?
Who did you use? Was it worth it?

Likewise, we're picking up a new 335d M Sport in March. We've gone with the dealer offer (£299) mainly due to the Lemon Dakota interior chosen.

Never had it before on any previous BM, so don't know how good it is.

You'll find many opinions on paint protection packages; in general what you're paying for is the warranty. For the most part paint protection like Glare, Xzilon, Diamond Kote, etc... are just high durability sealants applied by the dealer at a huge markup. They almost always come with a warranty that specifies that the product be re-applied every 6 months to a year (which almost no one does). Since most folks never go back it's a huge money maker for the dealership.

The warranties also prohibit you from polishing or waxing your paint, which is a big turn off in my opinion.

I'd say take the money and invest in a quality paint sealant, leather cleaner/conditioner, and some scotch guard for your carpets, and do it yourself in a day. You'll save 250 pounds.

If you want second, third, and forth opinions head over to autopia.org and search around.

Hi Picus

Without doubt we are just paying for the warranty, but that's what we wanted as the Lemon Dakota Leather is very light and easy to mark. It's a three year warranty as well and doesn't require re-applications and there are no washing restrictions.

Regards

Chris

With regard to the interior no, there are no re-apps required. I was talking about the paint protection. Currently there is no product which will last more than ~12 months on paint.

Regarding the warranty on the leather; it's definitely worth it if you expect there is a reasonable chance you'll use it.

Do you know if they can just do the exterior application?

Hi matlough

Don't know if exterior option only is available.

What we were offered was exterior paintwork, leather interior and carpet treatment guaranteed for three years without re-application.

Regards

Chris

They usually offer it as exterior, interior, or package - so you could do either or. Well, that's how they do it here anyway. I am not sure how it is usually handled in the UK.

In the UK, they will be quite happy to charge the full package price to just do the interior!

I asked about the paintwork protection when I ordered my car, but was put off by the price.

I asked whether using Mer would be any good, and the salesman told me that regular use of Mer, perhaps once a month, would be jsut as good as the paint protection.

I must be honest and say I swear by Mer. It always makes the car sparkle when I use it and it also removes stubbon marks on the paint (dead insects and grime) without the use for a cutting paste, like T-Cut. Plus I understand Mer coats the paintwork in a (invisible) polymer, which prevents damage from such corrosive things as bird crap.

I saw Mer at an autoshow a few years ago, and the demo they did involved using 2 new Mini body panels. One had Mer applied to it, the other didnt. They poured petrol over the two panels and set fire to them. The paint on the one without Mer bubbled, the one with Mer didnt!! Seemed to demonstrate Mer's toughness.

I bought a litre bottle a year ago, have only used half of it, having 'Mer'ed' my car once a month! Its a bargin if you ask me!

And before anyone asks, nope, I dont work for the Mer company!
