18" or 19" wheels??

I have a 325i non-sport package, and i am thinking about getting some wheels but I am not sure which size is better for the look and ride of the car, 18's or 19's. I dont want the car to be over-powered by the wheels, but I want the handling to be as good as possible. Anyone have any opinons on each size, pros and cons on them??

Get some 18" rims, that are light and strong. Get good tires. This will be the best for power/handling on your 325. Getting 19" rims will reduce your power output, since you'll be adding unsprung weight.

Well, you save money getting reps.

However, most reps are of a lower quality than OEM. There are exceptions to this, but when you're talking about M rims, it's mostly true that the reps are lower quality. Reps are usually a bit heavier, and a bit less sturdy.

Get 18 inchers.

The 325i isn't really powerful enough for 19 inchers in my opinion.
Your acceleration and gas mileage will drop significantly because of the increased rotational mass.

I agree with Matt, get a set of light 18" and great set of tires.
You will enjoy the increased handling and grip but not suffer much performance loss.

19 inchers look GREAT on the E90/92 platform BTW.

I have 19" ASA AR1 wheels with General Exclaim UHP tires on my 2006 sport pkg 325i, and compared to the stock 17" 161s, the acceleration seems the same and cornering is much better... gas mileage has been the same, too. Each of my 19" wheels and tires is about 10-12lbs lighter than my 161 wheels with Bridgestone run-flats, I weighed both sets when changing over. I'm sure a light 18" set will result in better performance than my 19" setup and stock 17" setup.

Wow, I have the same set up.
19" ASA AR1's and General Exclaim UHP on my 335i

I can't imagine you not losing performance over your stock OEM 17"
when you went to the 19" wheels.

Tirerack is full of sh1t when it comes to the weight of the ASA AR1's
They list them as
26.0 lbs for the front 19 x 8.5 and
28.7 lbs for the rear 19 x 9.5

I weighed them on a digital scale that's accurate to the .2 lbs and VERY consistent.
The ASA AR1's in above listed sizes actually weigh
28.8 lbs front
31.0 lbs rear

Those must be a bit heavier than the OEM 17" wheels.
As for the tires...if you went with 235 fronts and 265 rears they both
weigh in at 24 lbs (Tirerack says 24 for the front and 23 for the rear).

Those are probably close to the weight of the Runflats.

So maybe you are right, if you only added a couple pounds in wheel weight for the 19" wheels you probably wouldn't feel much different.
But there's also more drag too.

In any case, if I owned a 325i I'd go 18's.
I try to find a nice lightweight wheel (under 22-23 lbs for sure)
and light but good tires (like the Generals or Conti's or PS2's)
and know that I am getting better performance all around without suffering a drop in acceleration or gas mileage.

I weighed the 161 wheels and tires (the tires it came with when new, Bridgestone RE050A II RFT tires with 2200 miles on them) without the lug nuts, each front wheel & tire (225/45VR17) weighed 60.5 pounds, each rear wheel & tire (255/40VR17) weighed 62.0 pounds, weighed each wheel & tire 3 times and got same read outs on my digital bathroom scale. That's pretty heavy. Runflat tires are like boulders compared to "regular" tires.

That is CRAZY heavy! On my E36 M3 I run 17x18.5" SSR Comps with 255/40/17 tires and the total weight is 40 lbs (same overall diameter at 255/35/18 tires on E90). Switching to lightweight 18" rims (20 lbs or less) and normal tires (25 lbs) drops over 60 POUNDS of unsprung weight and bring the car's weight to the mid 3500s. Probably also makes a huge difference in ride and handling.

That can't be possible.
The 18" 162's with the Bridgestone RFT's weigh about 54 pounds front and 58 pounds rear.
I don't remember exactly, but that's about what they are give or take a bit.
So the 17" 161's couldn't possibly weigh more.

I'd say they weigh about 49-50 pounds front and 50-52 rear.

I'm sure other people have weighed the 17" 161's with OEM tires too.
I'd search but since it's not really relevant for me, I'm going to play the lazy card.

Just realised this forum covers it, but I posted similar question and was wondering, looks aside do 19's cut it?

On current Z4, even 18s seems like a stone skipping across a pond if I hit uneven road surface on a bend at say 80% of possible performance.

I checked the weight on my 162's with RFT before I put on my GY F-1's and they were 59.2 lbs for the the rear and 54 lbs in the front.

For the best look, go with 19", but 18" will give the best comfort. But if you look at all the car in here with 19" wheels I think 19" is the way to go.

18" Wheels fit?

I have a 06 325I and looking to upgrade my wheels. Will 18" wheels fit on this model? I was looking at 225/40 18 for tires. Any input or concerns?

Going +1 on wheel sizing over stock is usually the hot ticket. At +1 with a quality set of wheels you should be able to lower unsprung weight, increase performance and look good doing it!

RFT are more heavy that regular tires due to stiffer sidewall. That's why going from 18' RFT to 19" regular tires you won't notice much difference in ride performance.

I'm probably in the minority here but I think the e90 looks best with 18's. The wheel well arc exactly matches the arc of the 18" wheel. Also if the roads by you are anything like they are here in the NYC/NJ area, I'd be really afraid of damaging a 19" wheel. The 18" will ride better than the 19" all other things being equal.

18" Still look pretty good on a sedan, but 19"s look even better... That's just the way I feel... Hopefully you find the exact wheels you're looking for! Good luck!
