Headlight washer system on an E90

What a rigmarole!!!

My car has just had a service at the dealer.

Drove to Reading on Monday morning and of course the screenwash was frozen.

Returned to the car in the afternoon (parked in an underground carpark) and thought that I'd clean the filthy windscreen. I know what you're thinking... Yes headlights came on and the washer cycle started, spitting parts out! Picked up the bits and thought BMW will be helpful in fixing this!

Wrong

Rang them and they first blamed me for having the wrong amount of screenwash concentrate in the system, to which my response was "well you guys just serviced it!" I was then asked to bring the vehicle in and they'd "sort me out" as "it's all down to what we put on the warranty claim text".

Right I thought. Easy, they will fix it!

Wrong

The person on the service desk said that the bumper had to come off and they'd never seen the bits fall off in the way that I had them before! But they'd have a look and then give me a quote for the work needed. 5 minutes later I had an estimate for £83 to remove the bumper and try to fix the issue.

My response was "forget it, I'll fix the car myself".

Drove home

Got some warm water

Cleaned off the ice from the front of the car

Removed the nozzles from the plastic trim and re-inserted the rubber tubes back into the spray mechanism. Then placed the nozzle on top and it snapped into place.

Started a wash cycle and all was well. Then did it again, each time grabbing one of the sprayers and attaching the plastic trim back to the nozzle. 5 minutes and it was fixed. Thanks BMW dealer for all of that wasted time.

I just went out to do it on mine whilst I thought about it but according to the diagram fuse 48 is also used for the main washers. I didn't pull it out to check cos it's a bit of a faf on the e92.

Its 43 on mine e92 2006 335d - however it seems according to one of the guys on my other thread with 2009 335i its fuse 48 however this controls two other functions it seems according to the pic of diagram so could be a problem if you remove it.

Along the same lines, because of the cold weather lately i noticed one day my headlight washer was still out! frozen, and when i tried to sort it out the whole thing came out in my hand! bugger. once it was all defrosted enough i shoved it back in hoping to fix it and its gone back in, and flush with the bumper, but i havent tried it yet as its still too cold and i reckon the system wouldnt work.

Does anyone know about these / ever messed with them? is it just a push fit and should be ok now or should i take it to BMW? im a bit worried of the bugger falling out when driving....

Well the other half has taken my car today and called to say windscreen washers and wipers not working.

I said they're probably frozen solid and give it 20 mins they'll probably start working again, which they did. I'll be topping up with neat de-icer tonight.

There is no excuse for frozen washers in this weather.

If you read the instructions on the side of the screen wash you will see it is good way down to minus 20 and beyond if you actually use the correct amount (and yes this may mean using it neat)

Of course most people just stick a single bottle of the stuff in and wonder why things freeze up.

Now then m@rk IF that was aimed at me (and im not saying it was) then you are misunderstood, im not complaining about mine being frozen up or blaming anyone but myself, all i asked in my particular case was a technical question about how these little buggers attach and if it would be ok to push them back in if/when they do fall out for whatever reason....

Anybody...?

No. It was aimed at the people on here complaining that their washers are freezing up and thinking it is somehow a poor design or fault with the car and expecting the "dealer to fix it or there will be hell to pay"

Hmmmmm all that said, the question hasnt been answered. i.e. I parked my car up overnight and the temperatures for the first time ever in my area dropped to an all time low at least below -12% When I came out to my car in the morning the headlamp washer covers were slightly raised and had come disconnected as the water in the washers had frozen. So now I have two plastic covers which have two short nozzles attached. When the car thaws can you just push/pop these back into place or is their fiddly springs to find down there somewhere. For those defending BMW I dont think that this is anything less than a design fault Ive never heard of bits falling off a car because it got cold !!! Anyone know how these go back on without an £85 bill from BMW
