N55 Intake ideas

Hey guys, I recently purchased a 2011 335xi 4door.

Ive been looking at the engine bay and it seems like the N55 motor offers a few advantages due to the way the engine is set up.

http://www.bimmerfile.com/wp-content...N55-engine.jpg

If the Factory oil cooler were moved to the drivers side wheel well, then that would free up the space in the passenger wheel well.

If you look at where the factory intake is located it is sitting on the right side of the engine bay and receives air through the snorkel located on the front of the car.

I propose this intake piping be removed and since now the space is freed up in the passenger wheel well I can now put a very simple short ram cold air intake.

This intake would need to accommodate the 3 sensors that are locate along the factory intake piping.

This would allow for the coldest air possible traveling the shortest possible distance. I don't think this exists at the moment, but I will be creating a prototype for personal use.

There is something about the MAF sensor on the N55 that makes a cold air intake or any type of conical intake difficult to make. No one has made one so far that actually creates any sort of dyno gains, one company that tried it actually lost dyno power. I wish you the best of luck though, I feel like this is one area on the N55 that needs to be worked on. An intake is the base and first performance mod for any vehicle so I am actually surprised more people aren't working on one for the N55.

This is true. This is why there needs to be software included with any sort of intake. The software would distort the readings to go along with the intake.

I really hope BMW did not do this on purpose on the N55.

That intake looks hideous in the bay... But its a good diy if you dont mind the looks. its pretty much pointless w/o a dyno. Try and do a before and after to see if there is any changes.

Who cares what it looks like, as long as it performs.

the orientation of the MAF is wrong , maybe that's why your getting codes and stuff. you need to have it sideways, the same way it sits in the OEM pipe

Is it working? Even if the map is sideways?

well if he's not getting codes with the MAF sideways then the " intake is to difficult because of the MAF" argument is just BS

As far a kewl soundz go, might as well put some more playing cards in your bicycle spokes.
