Torque converter going out at 50800 miles

Hey guys,

So my car starting making a very loud, high pitched whistling noise so I had my mechanic take a look at it. He thought it was a vacuum leak, but it turned out to be my torque converter.

He said that even though my car is technically out of warranty, there is no reason that a 3 year old car at 50K miles should need a new torque converter/transmission.

Also, I brought my car in for a final "in-warranty" service at 49500 miles. Do you think they may have just let this slide so that I'd have to come in out of warranty and pay for it?

Do you think I have a shot of getting the dealer to cover this? It should be a defective part, not a tear and wear issue, right?

You are only 800 miles out of warranty. Go to the dealer you normally take it to and ask for a good will repair. If they don't want to do it then call BMWNA and tell them that your transmission is broken and it is only 800 miles out of warranty and can you repair it as "good will".

Keep us updated. Good luck.

Do you only notice the issue at a certain speed? I'd take it back to BMW and see if they will help you out.

I had to replace one at 38,000 and I am starting to have the same issues now that I had before (47,000).

I heard that same whistling sound and took the car in. They first thought it was a vacuum leak also but found out it was the torque converter.

So the car is sitting at the dealer for two weeks for the parts to come in and they are giving me a loaner without me paying a cent.

So glad I bought a CPO BMW. That would be an expensive fix
