Hi,

I've realised that the 20d doesn't come with a aluminium front grille where as the 30d does.

My budget will only allow the 20d and wondering whether after-market aluminum grille can be put on the 20d as I like the X3 with the aluminium grille? Am i correct in assuming this is not an option?

Part numbers for the titanium grille are

Left 511 172 374 21
Right 511 172 374 22

Dealer did not have a price on the system yet (I think they will be very popular) as soon as I can get a price I will be placing an order so that they can be fitted prior to driving away.

I browsed the Swedish BMW site they have a complete price list on the extras, both sides will cost you 1870 Sek or about 273 AUD.

I hope they keep to the foreign currency conversion rates as AUD is now parity with USD, i get the feeling they won't!

The material of the grille available with optioned accessories seems to be titanium whist the grille that comes standard on the x30d and x28i seems to be "aluminium satinised". The aluminium satinised is the wording contained within the australian basic equipment list.

It'd be hard to tell the difference between the two at a distance but i'd say the aluminium would match the kidney shaped outer grille, that ships as standard on all x3, more closely.

Its probably the same just termonoligy on different literature

Satinised is one of those made up words meaning smooth (like satin) polished aluminium. As I understand it, titanium alloy is stronger, lighter and more resistant to corrosion (and more expensive). An aluminium grille would suffice as you only want a colour match really and other parts of the car are aluminium not titanium anyway, but with titanium as the only option, titanium it has to be I guess. It will look the same as a standard satinised aluminium grille but you'll know it's better

I didn't see this reply until now. I'm not sure that's legal in the UK. You can't call something a ham sandwich if there's no ham in it! They should call it titanium silver or titanium look if that's the case.

I can confirm that the front grille has plastic slats on both the default standard black and the aluminium colouring. Checked this out myself the other day when visiting my local dealler as I was checking to see if there was any date yet for my x3 (ordered 22/12/10). Was thinking about going for the aluminium myself but can't bring myself to pay for colour plastic!!! Will do it myself

The description underneath the "Front grille in titanium" header in the printed UK accessories brochure does say "titanium-coloured longitudinal bars" but as you say it seems a lot of money for some plastic bars. But then when you consider it costs £2,500 for sat nav, perhaps they're a bargain after all!
