I have also been looking for the same part number. I need it for the V6 twin tailpipe. I bought my X3 three weeks ago and it would definitely make the exhaust pop.

Ahh, you got one of the rare, experimental new V6 engines. It must have slipped out of the BMW prototype skunkworks lab. Whatever you do, DON'T tell BMW your X3 has a V6!

Smart Alec

Lotus,

I realize you were joking but I was trying to differentiate the actual part number I needed. If you look in the X3 accessories brochure at items 6 & 7 there is a difference between the two items. There is a single version for the four cylinders and a twin version for six cylinders. Thank you for allowing me to clarify for the benefit of those that may get the rare four cylinder 2011 X3s.

You need this part 18 30 7 602 845 , and since you have the V6!!! you need two off them. Europeans with 20D can use 18 30 8 511 364 for the rare 4 Cyl.

Some times I just can't resist being a wise ass. No offense intended.
There is, in fact, at least one BMW that does have a V6 engine, but it didn't come from any BMW factory that way.

see: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7fWjkLnok0>

You will like the BMW tailpipe covers, our 35i has them and they are just right for the car. They are probably good for at least 7 or 8 horsepower when clean.

Are these in fact just a cover and not a replacement? Meaning-anyone could put them on? And are they the same # for both the 28 and 35? Thanks for the info.

They are, in fact just well made, polished covers with nice rolled edges. Although I haven't seen the units for the 28i, I suspect, but certainly am not positive, that they are different from the 35i pieces. I believe someone on this forum commented that the 28i [accessory] exhaust tips are held on with a single set screw on each pipe. I've looked at the units on our 35i, and see no setscrew. They seem to be permanently attached to the pipes on the 35i. Just to avoid any confusion, the quoted 7or 8 hp gain is purely psychosomatic - it truly exists, but only in one’s mind.

While inspecting the exhaust tip situation on the 35i, I noticed that one of the exhaust outlets is blocked by a pneumatic operated butterfly valve. Looks like only one of the muffler outlets is used most of the time, but presumably, at high revs or under boost, the other outlet is opened.

Will check into this in more detail later.

I have no first-hand knowledge that this is correct, but have seen the following part number mentioned as being the 35i chrome tip, which is supposed to also fit the 28i.

BMW P/N: 183 076 028 45 (each tip)

I did take a look at the chrome tips on my car, and there is no set screw or clamp visible. It looks like the tips are just pressed on the pipes, but there may be some hidden fastener there that is just not apparent. I'm sure that if you have a chrome tip in hand it will be apparent how it attaches to the pipe.

Again, this is what I've read on other BMW forums and blogs. Proceed at your own risk. I'd ask my BMW parts counter guy to agree to take them back if it's obvious that they won't fit.

I got the same part number from this board, ordered them, and installed them on my X2 2.8i without any problems at all. They just "push" on. They have metal teeth that prevent them from being pulled off (they dig into the metal exhaust when you try to pull them off).

As long as you make sure they are on straight when you fit them, it's easy as pie. You push them on with your hand at first and then use a rubber mallet to finish the job (rubber only so as to not damage the chrome).

Nick776 where did you order this (BMW P/N: 183 076 028 45) from?

My dealer ordered them. I got the part number from this board before I signed the papers on the car. I told the dealer that I wasn't going to take the car unless they gave me the pipes for free (cause it's RIDICULOUS that BMW left them off, so inexpensive). I said it half-jokingly, but the dealer gave them to me without fuss. They were on backorder for a week or so, but they finally came in.
