Staggered tires on 5501x?

First post!

I am trading my 2006 550i for a 2011 550ix M sport this week. I am going to use my current Dunlop 18 inch winter tires for the rest of this winter and then find 19 inch winter tires for next year. My question is: Can I run staggered tire sizes on a 550ix? I like the look of wider rear tires on my 2006 and would like to run the wider rears that are on a 550i (275's) instead of the 245's all around on the 550 ix. Any reason I couldn't use the rims that come with the car for winter tires and buy staggered rims/tires for summer tires?

By the way, I switched to non run flats three years ago on my 2006 for summer and winter tires and will do the same immediatley on my 2011. Bridgestone run flats on my 2006 were a disaster: loud, harsh, and often replaced at $400 a piece when I hit pot holes. Dunlap DWS have been great for a summer tire (worthless in snow though) and Dunlop Winter Sport 3D are great for a winter tire. I glady traded a little handling on on ramps for an acceptable ride quality.

From my experience with Audi (quattros), this is a bad and stupid idea.

Referring to other online sources, you will put undue pressure on either the center differential, or, in newer AWD setups like BMW xDrive, the electronics controlling the power distribution.

It will also disrupt ESP and any other electronic wizardry which is calibrated for an AWD setup.

Someone also joked that it would actually be better to put wider tires up front (much like a SnoCat has).

The standard setup for the 550i xDrive M-sport ( Europe ) with 19" is 245 front and 275 rear. So no problems at all. For winter use 275 is too wide imo. I drive on 255-19 both front and rear during winter.

Heavy snowfall today, but excellent traction and stability

My e60 550 has 245/40 18 front and 275/35/18 rear. I run 245s all around for winter tires (agree with previous post that 275s are too wide for winter). For US F10 I am told 550i comes with 245/40/19 front, 275/35/19 rear, but 550ix comes with 245s all around. If Euro spec F10 550ix comes with 275s rear...must be OK?

My 550ix M sport arrived today and it has 245/40/19 Goodyear Eagle LS-2's all around.

I have the same 2011 550ix and really dislike the Goodyear Eagle LS2's. Ride seems way to soft and feels more like a Lexus LS 450. Are you thinking of swapping the tires out. I have been looking at Michelin Pilot Sport A/S but they are not available in run flat in the 245/40-19 size.

I swapped out the Goodyear OEM RFTs with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 nonRFTs. Dealership made even trade. Never drove on teh OEM RFTs, put on winter tires on 18 inch rims right away. I switched out RFTs on my e60 550i four years ago, though, much better ride.

I don't see why not all non-staggered F10 OEM wheels shouldn't fit, 18" and up.

And I wonldn't be suprised if the staggered wheels would fit too, but I dont think I've seen any F10 with the xdrive and staggered wheels in here yet.

I also have 2011 f10 x drive with m sport. I really don't like the rear tire with 245 width.
So is it ok to change the rear tire little wider? If some one have experience already, could you tell me what size tires I can exchange to?
I don't even know my x drive system will work!
By the way I have 245/40r19 all 4 tires.

Hey every one I just joined this site 5 mis ago and am happy to be here. I just put AC Schnitzer Type V wheels on my two week old F10 M Sport 550XI. 20' all around staggered fit with Michilen PS2 Supersports 285 rear 255 front. Non RF. I plan on using my stock rims for winter. The ride is WAY better with the Michilens.

I did the Dinan down load and did the full ACS package except for the rear window spoiler

I love the power its awsome. I think it would be faster if you short shift a bit under full throttle insted of letting the auto sport trans shift. It seams to wait too long and fall out of the power band then it shifts and theres a huge pull in the next gear. So I think a slightly earliar shift would benefit the acceleration. I was at a seminar with Steve dinan at my dealer. He specifically said they do not alter the shift points in thier program. Its the biggest bang for the buck you'll ever get. 95 HP for $3,000.

The issue is not the staggered-width of the tires but matching overall diameter (rolling diameter). Because tires are sized by the ratio of width to height, there is no exact "sizing" of the rolling diameter, it's a result of the ratio. It's been pointed out that X5s and European 550xi are delivered with an awd staggered setup. Unclear whether there is a computer configuration difference or not.

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=580429

The key for AWD, is keeping the rolling diameter for the fronts and rears as close as possible, definitely within 1% but hopefully closer. There are charts of the approximate tire "overall diameter", which can allow you to select staggered setups which are within AWD tolorances. ( Keep in mind the rolling diameter is also slightly affected by the rim width used, and you may need a wider rear rim to fit the wider rear tire. )

For example, this combo looks pretty darn close for a RFT summer tire:

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP 245/40R18 - 25.7"
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP 275/35R18 - 25.6" (0.1 / 25.7 => 0.38%, which is pretty close)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....t+Sport+PS2+ZP

This looks pretty darn close for an A/S (but isn't RFT):

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 245/40/R18 - 25.7"
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 275/35/R18 - 25.6"

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ort+A%2FS+Plus

(I have no affiliation with either tirerack or Michelin, I just did a quick search to find a site that lists overall diameter and used the above links to illustrate the point.)

Plenty of AWD cars running staggered setups. My p turbo runs 245s in front and 315s in the rear. It came with 235/285 setup. My GTR has 245/275 from the factory. Key is keeping the rolling diameter within an acceptable tolerance as mentioned above.
My 550 X drive arrived last night and I will be running a staggered setup asap

Hey Tws_Andrew, congratulation on your 550ix, it's a wonderful drive, enjoy!
Did you have a chance to install the staggered wheels on it? Would you please let us know how did it go? And what tires/wheels configuration you have used? I have been planning to stagger mine too but slowed down recently, due to many conflicting advices!!

If I put wheel size 20 with 8.5 width and put 255'/35/20 tires all around do I have to worry about rolling diameter or anything like that since they will all be the same? Also is it better to get 8.5 wheel width all around or 9?

If your going with 255/35/20 I'd go with 9" wide wheels.

Do you know if the M sport rims in Europe are the same width as the US version? I would like to put 255 on front and 275 or 285 on rear but want to use stock M sport rim.

Yes, the 19" 351M are 19x8.5 ET33, and 19x9 ET44 rear if you have a staggered setup.
