It's pretty straightforward. Locate the little box in the corner of the engine bay (pop your hood), closest to the LHD driver. Remove the few screws and pop open the black lid to access the insides of this box. The ECU is sandwiched in the middle somewhere lol
It's the only silver one, with approximately 1 inch of width. You might need to use some thin flathead screwdrivers to help prod it out since it's very packed/tight in there. Then disconnect the cable(s) going into the ECU box. I'm assuming you're sending ECU out for tuning? I never had to do this for my M, but did it for my 325, which is very very similar in location and box design. |

...look about 2/3rds down the page. Bill has posted some great info. If you are doing it now, make sure that you have a heated work area. You have to move wire bundles around etc, & things will be very stiff in the cold weather.

Successfully removed the ECU, Bill's website was a major help, much better than the active autoworks site so I would like to give Bill credit where its due
Thanks again everyone for the help, i'll be posting up a write up probably on sunday about my tune but will not have any dynos until spring

Yay, now your black box isn't a virgin anymore
BTW, what tune are you going with? Could you PLEASE do a before-and-after dyno comparison? NO-ONE else has been helpful with this |
