non LED tailight upgrade
hey guys this great suggestion imo is to anyone who owns a E90. i replaced the ugly, clear halogen 1156 bulbs in the tailight strips with cherry red xenon bulbs and they make a HUGE difference. they look LED actually. i made the mistake of not buying the trunk bulbs, but side to side you can see the difference.i think these bulbs are painted, but they also sell colored glass bulbs, which probably look great too
Then i plugged in the cherry colored xenon bulbs in each of the other brake, and turn signal housings and they also look great. No errors to report, as they are just xenon 25 watt bulbs To describe the comparison, the oem color of the LED strips look pinkish-orange, while the new bulb makes it look a nice deep red. I WILL POST pics as soon as i get the other eight red 1156 bulbs this week, i only ordered 2 at first. there are 5 bulbs on each side for 10 total. Im sure im not supposed to advertise websites on here but i will say they were 2.49 each, 4 dollar shipping for a quantity of eight bulbs. i paid 24 bucks. The company is from Arizona, not China or anything OK PICS ARE IN! the first pic with the yellow lookin lights are STOCK. the second is with the bulbs in, however the pic does no justice. my camera cant image the brightness well. im gonna try another day to take better pics. thanks for lookin. i strongly suggest this tail light bulb upgrade i have also bought the license plate festoon xenon bulbs, which are colored glass but they do look white, and not bluish. i thought id share this and i will post pics after my new bulbs arrive Last edited by RectalItching; 02-09-2011 at 09:54 PM.. |

the reason i went hunting for a new bulb is because i bought BMW oem blacklines, and with the clear bulbs in, you could see the top of the talilight strip is white-yellow, because the upper tailight is now clear, not red. so i returned them. you guys with blacklines know what im talking about. so now i want to buy depo blacklines, non-leds. it should look sick! pics will be promised probably thurs. it takes seconds to replace the bulbs, the housing just clips in

I bought DEPO led tails and also bought JLevi's backup light LED conversion, but didnt installed it yet.
They sell it for cheap; like $20 and look ultra white on dark red. I hope the LEDs wont burn over time.

all bulbs installed
so i installed all ten 1156 red cherry xenon bulbs and it reall looks great on the tail lights. however, my pics dont show very well the difference. the running light strips look orange in the pictures still a little bit, but in person they dont at all. i will get the pics up tonight i have to get the usb cord out. i would recomemend these bulbs a maybe switch out the turn signals for LED's. that would look REALLY sharp. so a final upgrade would be 8 cherry 1156 bulbs and 2 LED turn signal bulbs. that sight does not have a 25-27 watt turn signal (1157?) however they do have load resistors to get 25 W loads but that would be messy, i would just get the J LEVI's. for the place i got mine, google: auto illumination. thats the place. they are called red cherry xenon for 2.49 ea. i think. i got the license plate light from there too. they dont look as bright on my graphite metallic e90. they looked awesome on my titanium tho, but its still a cheap alternative to LED. those are 3.50 ea. i think

How about brightness of the three stripes? I always notice if there is a 3er in front of me, stripes always get a little lost in the rear reflectors. It would be awesome if they were more clearly defined.
I wish you had pics of one side oem and other side cherry xenon.

I see that you are in Blainville. Between april and september, I got to Mirabel (St-Janvier) every weekend for paintball.

I own a franchise (team) in the Canadian XBall League and one of our main sponsor is Paintball Mirabel.
I dont plan on installing those before the temperature goes up a little bit. Modding your car with frozen hands really sucks,

the color of the strips are more defined because they are not as orange-pink, which kinda overwhelms your eyes at night in my opinion. they are a more deep red. i have gotten a few PMs for the site. google "auto illumination". they have many different kinds of cool bulbs. these are called xenon cherry red 1156. i also bought my license plate bulbs and my chrome front turn signals. for those that have reasons for non-LED's. one comment thats kinda important, last night i realized i in a car's reflection that wen my reverse lights come on, my turn signal bulb stays on, which is no big deal for me, i just didnt want to upset anyone for not knowing. i think i was supposed to get a 1157 for that. oops. but i replaced all 10 bulbs with 1156's. |

1156 xenon cherry red. if you have blacklines, you need a different color for your turn signal. red is legal, but the red colored bulb will show thru the top corner tail obviously. i would go with a chrome colored amber or red bulb. im going with amber, i dont want to risk the two different reds not matching.
