Exclamation Curtain Airbag just went off!

I was in front of my brother today, we were coming back to the house, and we saw eachother, I was ahead of him by a few car lenghts and we are just cruising at 40 in a 35 like normal...all of a sudden in my rear view mirror, i see 4 headlights (2 being his and 2 being a car next to him) then unexpectedly the car cuts my brother off without a flasher and did not even see him, i then see my brothers headlights jump up (i knew he hit the curb, and hard).

The other car then kept on going as if he did nothing wrong, so i pull a maneuver in front of him, slowed him down gradually and he tried switching lanes but I didnt let him go. I then stuck my hand out the window to pull over, and he does, I jump out of the car, and to my surprise its a doctor, he thought i was robbing him or something becuase he had no idea what he just did.

I tell him to look back a little bit, and he see my brothers car, On the side of the road with hazards on. with closer inspection we realize the side curtain airbag went off and both wheels are bent with severly damaged tires. worst nightmare. At least the man did not make something up and was honest.

My brother was puzzled as to why his airbag went off, and I explained to him as best I could and i beleive this is right, but if im wrong someone please clarify...
Airbag sensors work and activate the airbag by a sudden acceleration much greater then the car can produce on its own (Turning, accelerating, breaking)
and in addition to having sensors detect the lateral change in acceleration, it apparently has sensors that measure horizontal change??? could someone clarify? this is going to be an expensive accident IMO

I would be surprised if BMW would make that info readily available, but would be quite interested.

Maybe this "doctor" was willing to pay out of pocket. If not, I'd call the cops and get a police report.

Hope all goes well.

Could also have been caused by the impact to the curb. Did his rocker panel smack the curb and sustain damage, or just the wheels?

Did BMW Assist call 911 for your brother? Btw, you never mentioned what type of car your brother was driving.

He doesnt have BMW assist, He has a 2004 330ci ZHP

No body damage, but there was 2 bent wheels, a deployed curtain airbag, and maybe suspension components were bent ( i really hope not)

At least this guy was willing to pay for it out of pocket (although when he realizes that its going to come out to a lot more than just 2 wheels, he might go through insurance)

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine..... He hit a side walk while he was doing 45 bec some idiot cut infront of him.... Luckily, the other driver stopped at a red light and did manage to get him.... His insurance did not pay for anything because there was no contact between the two cars and there was no plice report explaning the whole thing..... My friends insurance ended up covering the whole thing... Insurace company pretty much told us it is better to hit the other person than try to avoid the whole thing and end up damaging your car anyway....
